Cool My night as a monster at Knott's Scary Farm 2013

Hi everybody,Scarymouse here reporting on my visit to Knott's Scary Farm as a raffle winner from Micechat's 2012 event.Last year at the Haunt event I happen to win the raffle that gave away a chance to be a monster in a maze plus a couple of tickets to the Haunt. As it happened we had a communication breakdown and I didn't make it to the event. So as instructed by the awesome duo of fishbulb and dustysage, I let them know when I would be able to attend which was on Friday October 18th.I had been contacted by Knott's approving the date and was told they would be in touch. So on Thursday we arrived in the L.A. area from the San Francisco Eastbay area. got our room and prepared to go to Universal Horror nights. Which we did and it was pretty good, we did the VIP and went through the paranormal investigation, nothing scary a light show and a actor we a few of the gadgets from the movie Insidious 2 , but comical at best the dinner buffet was good and the access , well always do front of the line or don't even bother.....lines lines lines....even on Thursday night,I believe it was a sellout so get tickets in advance. Overall Liked the walkers from Waking dead and the Black Sabbath maze was on the top of the list for me although Universal does do a great job , the cost is excessive for what you get, especially for VIP experience, they play up the exclusive aspect but after the trolley backstage ride they escort you thru two mazes and then cut you loose, with the glorified front of the line pass and sent into the masses and a dinner oh yes there were two adult beverages and valet parking but still far from what used to be provided attention and guidance wise..they are trying interaction with guest but failed miserable at it in my opinion. Knott's on the other hand are doing a lot better job for less money and there are more mazes and shows to rest yourself at, that are pretty good at that. Mind you that this was before even going to knott's . So back to my makeover, Anyway Friday arrived and I had gotten e- mail from my Knott's rep Leidy. She had instructed me where to go a what to say to the guards(secret word) and what gate to arrive and we we got there she would meet with me and my daughter. We followed instructions and sure enough Leidy arrived with her assistant and we were taken into the hidden lair of Haunt central. I meet so many of Knott's staff I can't remember everybodies name but I meet both heads of the costume and wardrobe departments Tom and Tim I believe which were both very nice Tom took me to wardrobe and got me a Plaid western shirt and a hat cowboy of course a apron.....this was the wear part and off to makeup. We had predetermined through my communication with Leidy I thought that the slaughterhouse would best suit someone of my stature ( I'm a big guy) although I had my pick of any maze. So slaughterhouse it is going to be, I was taken in to the very impressive Make up dept were they do about a 1000 different make - up's a night during haunt a impressive feat and they do awesome work.Granted there is a lot of masks used but also some pretty advanced techniques are used to transform your average person into a full on scareactor . Angelica was assigned the task to transform me into a Farmer Willy. After several minutes I was transformed. Now I was in costume and escorted towards the maze.... Into the park we went walking in a quick pace to get to the maze in the most direct possible.....still it was a little far from back stage...meeting up with guest's along the way, the responses were priceless. Lot's of oohhs and aaaaahhs, that guys scary...a few screams.... runaways....all great fun... I was ready for my adventure in a maze.....awesome We meet Alex the maze manager, and we were lead through the maze to find out the flow of it....He then said that I could go anywhere I wanted to find a spot and go to it use any of the props or gags I wanted. This is Farmer Willy's Slaughterhouse since your Farmer willy get to scaring up some new meat for the barbecue. I decided to post up in the kitchen potion of the maze with 3 other actors because its a large room with a really dark corner and a wall I could pop out and scream at my intended victim.I saw everything from screaming and crying one guest threw herself onto a lady in a wheelchair and collapsed screaming onto the floor, initially shocked from the response someone picked her up and of they went and on and it was on to the next scare the pace is constant just a few seconds in between groups. Initially I was to do a half an hour but Leidy said I could go until I wanted to hang up the apron and cleaver. Almost two hours later....nearly exhausted, full of sweat and a hoarse voice..... along came Leidy and asked if I had enough or wanted to keep going. I had had my fill and retired as Farmer Willy.. As a retrospective look at my experience it was the most awesome things that have ever done in my lifetime ( and I've done some crazy things) that said I can never say enough good things to say about Knott's Scary Farm staff. They are the best in my opinion for what they do with the budget they have, its a top notch operation.Everybody was extremely pleasant to be with and went out of their way to make my experience the best that it could be. Leidy and her team are the best, they gave my daughter and I VIP passes to all the park had to offer after I de monsterfied...to enjoy the park and we did. If you haven't ever gone and are thinking about it. In my opinion, Knott's over Universal hands down and that's from a VIP standpoint I learned along time ago to get the front of the line pass. If you don't, expect a huge crowd and long lines, but the lines are at every park and if you can afford it( better vip bargain thru a Micechat event) you will be able to see all you care to enjoy. And get tickets ahead of time, they do sell out and there is always a parking fee. My first visit was in 1975, I have been a fan for a long time and my how times have changed. In the beginning a few shows and fog in the ghost town but now its a a different level the competition is tremendous If you have gone in the past give them another try they really have stepped their game with new innovative shows and mazes. So has Universal for that matter but with the reduction of mazes at universal . It kinda felt lacking. we were in at 7:00pm and had seen everything by 10:00pm had seen everything at Universal. We started at 9:00 pm and went to well after 1:00am, we missed out on two mazes because we were to exhausted to continue but I got to see Elvira so I was good. And with that Haunt 2013 was over for us. We got our annual shirts and the ceremonial quick stop at Pinks and headed off back to the motel. I also was allowed to keep my entire costume as a souvenir...something I will cherish ! I love that apron and that pig. So there you have it, a awesome time at a awesome place . now if we can just get dusty to get a raffle going to be in the haunted mansion.........I can dream can't I.....Thanks to Dusty Sage and Fishbulb and all at Micechat I am forever grateful for this experience of a lifetime. Knott's welcomed me to to become one of the monsters for next years season ....if only it was closer....I'd would find the stamina to do it,,,Those guys and gals work their butts off every night to give people what they desire...... a good scare! My hats off to all of those involved they do a great job. thanks for putting up with my ramblings and for Knott's putting up with me. ......see you next year in the fog......Scarymouse

    Yes, much easier, thank you.

Sounds like you had a fantastic night! Thanks for the report! Slaughterhouse was a good choice, since it is one I thought could benefit from a few more scare-actors there.

It's my #1 "Things I'd fix on the forums" - the loss of formatting on long posts. I had to go through and re-edit my TR on HHN, I has the feels.
