Saturday at the D23 Expo delivered the highly anticipated sequel to Friday’s Studios Showcase Day 1 Panel, the Studios Showcase Day 2 Panel! With a focus on Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, and 20th Century Studios. It was a heavy morning of reveals, announcements, trailers, and never-before-seen footage, so let’s get to it!
(Note: we were sitting a bit off to the side and had to take some photos of screens, so you will notice some distortion in the images below)
LUCASFILM
Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Bergman kicked off the festivities by bringing on stage Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm.
Andor
Andor was on the top of the docket since it premieres the soonest on September 21. Cast members Diego Luna (Cassian Andor, Adria Arjona (Bix Caleen), Genevieve O’Reilly (Mon Mothma), and Kyle Soller (Syril) all spoke about their characters with Diego giving a special shoutout to the Spanish speakers in the audience.
A final trailer was shown for the first time to the audience.
As a related note, Diego visited Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge yesterday as well:
Willow
Warwick Davis reprises his role as Willow Ufgood in the new series for Disney+, dropping on November 30, 2022.
The cast also revealed that Christian Slater is a part of the cast and dropped the latest trailer as well.
Bad Batch Season 2
Not much was said for Star Wars: Bad Batch Season 2 but it’s coming on January 4th to Disney+!
Here’s the previously released trailer:
Tales of the Jedi
Dave Filoni is giving us more Ahsoka in animated form with six new animated shorts titled Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. The new shorts look to be similar in style to Clone Wars and will debut exclusively on Disney+ and give more insight into characters such as Count Dooku.
Tails of the Jedi will drop on October 26, 2022.
Ahsoka
The filmmakers are still hard at work on the new series coming soon to Disney+. Dave Filoni talked a lot about how much he loves this character, and that he was thinking about bringing her to live action as far back as twenty years ago, when he was still collaborating with George Lucas.
Skeleton Crew
Filmmakers Jon Watts and Chris Ford are weeks into production and promise to deliver an exciting series about a group of kids who get lost in the Star Wars universe. There was very little to say, but an image of Jude Law in costume on set was flashed on screen.
Mandalorian Season 3
Disney Legend Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have been hard at work on the third season of The Mandalorian. It was the last D23 Expo that we learned about the series and the upcoming season promises even more surprises.
The cast of the show joined Kathleen Kennedy on stage and could not contain their excitement.
Indiana Jones 5
The still-untitled Indiana Jones film was the final entry from Lucasfilm. Director James Mangold spoke about wanting to make a picture like this since he was 10 and is working with his favorites: filmmaker Steven Spielberg, actor Harrison Ford, and composer John Williams.
We were treated to a new trailer that looks incredible and seemed to deeply move not only the audience but all the filmmakers as well. Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir was seen, reprised by John Rhys-Davies.
Following the trailer, Harrison Ford and co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge stepped onto the stage, where Harrison became emotional reflecting on his work on the series.
“This is it! I will not fall down for you again!” Harrison Ford told all of us.
Marvel Studios
Head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige took to the stage still recovering from the emotional punch of the Indiana Jones footage, and lamented about other panels having musical numbers.
Feige got his wish in the form of Mark Shaiman (composer) and a band performing “Save the City” from Rogers: The Musical, a scene from the hit series Hawkeye.
The spectacle was complete with all the singers and dancers from the show. Pleased with pulling that off, it was time to get into the upcoming slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Filmmaker Ryan Coogler took a break from finishing the last film of Phase 4 to introduce the cast and a complete scene from the upcoming film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever showcasing a powerful performance from Angela Bassett.
The cast was most excited about fans being able to see Wakanda again, and it’s clear that the spirit of Disney Legend Chadwick Boseman was very present.
Here’s the previously released trailer:
Ironheart
Ryan Coogler stayed on stage to discuss a new series coming to Disney+ titled Ironheart, a character to be introduced in Wakanda Forever. A trailer was shown but they’re still shooting in Atlanta and Chicago.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
The sexiest man alive, Paul Rudd, was joined by Evangeline Lilly and Jonathan Majors to dodge around the kick-off of Phase 5 coming in February 2023.
After rating the sexiness of the audience, they showed a trailer from the film, which promises to be unlike anything seen in the MCU.
Werewolf by Night
Composer Michael Giacchino fulfills a childhood dream of making a special for Halloween that will debut on Disney+ titled Werewolf by Night. Despite that, Giacchino was still reeling from the Indiana Jones trailer, quipping to Fiege “Alright, nerd to nerd. How emotional was that Indiana Jones theme?”
The upcoming Disney+ premieres October 7th, starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Laura Donnelly, and seeks to be like classic monster films like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman.
Secret Invasion
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) returns with Col. Rhodes (Don Cheadle) in this new series made for Disney+. A new trailer dropped with a meeting between Nick Fury and Col. Rhodes:
Armor Wars
Don Cheadle returns in this series followup to Secret Invasion. The show goes into production soon.
Loki Season 2
Tom Hiddleston and crew return for another season for Loki, revealing Ke Huy Quan as a new cast member of the series. “I’m sorry is this not the panel for Indiana Jones?” Ke quipped. New footage was revealed to the audience.
Fantastic 4
The new Fantastic 4 was briefly mentioned, as WandaVision director Matt Shakman was in attendance and announced as the director for this film.
Echo
The follow-up to Hawkeye follows the character of Maya, played by Alaqua Cox, who isn’t quite rid of King Pin (Vincent D’Onofrio) yet.
A special focus was paid to Cox, who is deaf and plays the deaf character in the show, as well as a focus on the indigenous backgrounds of the characters and actors.
Daredevil: Born Again
Vincent D’Onofrio lingered on stage to implore that Kevin Feige talk about his new show on Disney+. “Don’t you mean my show?” actor Charlie Cox (Daredevil) yelled from offstage, coming out to the title of the new show Daredevil: Born Again.
The show hasn’t begun filming yet, but they did show a scene from an upcoming episode of She-Hulk Attorney at Law.
Captain America: New World Order
When we last saw Anthony Mackie at the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he was dubbed the new Captain America. He returns to the show as Captain America.
Production begins early next year.
Thunderbolts
The Thunderbolts brings in several existing characters found in the MCU and puts them together in a rag-tag team led by Julie Louise Dreyfuss (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine). The new feature also stars David Harbour (Red Guardian), Hannah John-Karmen (Ghost), Wyatt Russell (US Agent), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), and Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier).
The Marvels
Summer of 2023 brings The Marvels, the sequel to Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson (Carol Danvers). This time she’ll have a team that includes Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau) and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan).
A trailer was shown giving us a flavor of the new film that jumps in immediately following the Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel.
20th Century Studios
And to wrap things up in the panel, 20th Century Studios finished out the presentation.
Avatar: The Way of Water
At this point, the panel was already 20 minutes over, but there was still one last “surprise” from 20th Century Studios: Avatar: The Way of Water. Filmmaker James Cameron participated remotely, introducing producer Jon Landau and the cast of the film.
But that’s not all, Dolby 3D glasses were distributed to the audience to experience several out-of-context scenes from the new film. The footage was incredibly visually striking, but I can’t say it helped generate excitement for the film in any way due to the lack of context.
Audience members were given a poster of concept art from the upcoming film releasing this holiday season:
