Disney Buys Paramount's Rights To Marvel Films

Disney Buys Paramount's Rights to Marvel Films (DIS)

Disney (NYSE: DIS ) is mopping up the last few odds and ends of Marvel that it doesn't yet own.

Four years after signing its $4 billion deal to acquire the comic book-***-comic book movie producer, The Walt Disney Company announced Tuesday that it has inked a follow-on agreement among its Studios division, Marvel Studios subsidiary, and Paramount Pictures, to buy the latter's distribution rights to several Marvel Studios films.

Specifically, on June 30, Disney bought rights to Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger, paying an unspecified sum for the rights. Disney already owned the rights to Marvel's The Avengers and Marvel's Iron Man 3, having bought those from Paramount in 2010.

Paramount's existing distribution commitments remain in force. Future distribution rights now pass to Disney.

May be interesting, but do I foresee a plot to raise prices on dvd's?

Take a look some time at how many directions Marvel's rights are flung across the entertainment landscape. X character is leased to Y company but only for theme park rides. A mutant appears in B storyline, but only in movie format. Every set of licenses comes with a separate set of lawyers to be negotiated with and a separate set of fees to be paid.

I can see some very solid reasons for trying to mop up the outliers.

Perhaps this purchase will expedite Disney's building of new Marvel-based attractions.

Wouldn't that require the purchase of rights from Universal?

That doesn't mean they can't build them in Disneyland. Or any other Disney park.

Technically it is East of the Mississippi River. There are also limits on Marvel stores.

The deal also has no expiration date and the licensing fee increases only with inflation.

Not any of Disney's four parks east of the Mississippi

While there is no expiration, there are other contractual factors that could force the deal to terminate with the theme park rights reverting back to Disney.
