Coming from NorCal for the Meet- SNOW on the Grapevine!

We plan on coming down Friday, early. If you plan on driving late friday please be aware there is a VERY high chance of snow and Ice on I-5 from the Grapevine to past Goreman. Closeures are possible!

It will be raining the entire way down I-5 from the Bay Area and Central Valley.

PLEASE drive carefully and allow extra time for the trip. Drive in daylight hours if at all possible.

Heavy Rain is expected in Anaheim on Saturday, and Showers on Sunday.

Please come prepared and once again PLEASE drive safely! We don't need to move part of the meet to some hospital.

Forecast for Arvin (Just before the Grapevine)-
http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USCA0048.html

Goreman (Top of the Grapevine)-

That depends . . . . how many Rally points do we get per hospital?

For those making a trip on the I-15 across the high desert (like me), there's a 70% chance of rain and snow showers late Thursday/early Friday in Hesperia, just before you reach the Cajon Pass. Be careful.

We're in the same situation Pan! I'm not sure that 101 is a good option if you're leaving Sacramento at 6pm Friday night. But, it's a safer one, it seems! We'll continue to check road conditions as the night goes on and head over to 101 if necessary!

Im thinking about the 101 too.... but it is so long.... And conditions by the coast will be very stormy at last check.

Like Tiggerfan, I am hoping mid day friday the 5 will be ok....

Just saw that portions of the grapevine are closed, as of now.

Re: Coming from NorCal for the Meet- SNOW on the Grapevine!

Ick.

I-5 through the Grapevine can expect closures though saturday due to very high winds, rain, and snow flurries. High winds and heavy rain can be expected from Patterson to the Grapevine during this time as well. 99- from Modesto south...

101 has mudslide and flood warnings from San Luis Obispo to Santa Maria, and heavy rain and extremley high wind warnings from Pismo Beach to Ventura from thursday until early saturday.

Sounds like this is going to be an interesting drive.

Re: Coming from NorCal for the Meet- SNOW on the Grapevine!

We are leaving Northern Nevada Friday morning way before the sun comes up headed down 395. I'm hoping most of this stops at the Sierras and our side of the mountains aren't so bad. We've woken up to fresh snow every morning since Monday, so I assume we will tomorrow too. Oh well, we are leaving in plenty of time to take it slow and not get stressed.

See you all on Saturday!

Re: Coming from NorCal for the Meet- SNOW on the Grapevine!

Another thought--If you are coming from Nor-Cal have you looked into 58 from Bakersfield to Mohave and then south on 14 through Palmdale? They are mostly forcasting "high winds". It's been years (decades?) since I've gone that route on 58, so I don't know how high it gets, but I know that we take 395 and then go south on 14 and avoid both Cajon Pass and the Grapevine. I know it would be out of the way but if it is snow, rain and mudslide free, it might be worth it.

Re: Coming from NorCal for the Meet- SNOW on the Grapevine!

Hmmmm perhaps we need to do some research on alternate routes if the road is still closed on Friday.......

Just glancing at the maps it seems that if Grapevine is closed and 101 is a problem we have a couple options.

I think 5 or 99 south is the easiest to get down around Bakersfield. It will be wet but not as much an issue as 101 on the coast.

From there the best option would seem to be to go East on 58 to 138, then take 138 South to 14 and then 14 West to 5 in Santa Clarita. However 58 has been closed due to snow as well, so it might be out.

Or you can go the western route of 166 West to 33 South which then takes you into 101 (assuming it is open) and from there drive South to 126 East which takes you to 5 around Santa Clarita.

Any other suggestions, just in case ?

Hopefully the closure of 5 is mostly during the night and if we drive in the daytime it won't be an issue, but we do want to be prepared...
