Re: 7/5: Somebody Got the Memo

Great piece, Kevin. And even though it's more work for you, I really like the mix of printed news and the narrated slide show. Keep it up!

A couple of comments. First, although I know we'd like to think that Disney is reading us on these boards and responding to our wish for fixes, you can almost bet money that the fixes were totally in response to Iger and other executives coming to the park. I've been in many corporate situations where the word goes out to get everything in perfect shape cuz Mr. Big-wig is coming tomorrow. This seems like exactly the same thing.

And about the ladder: never good to see on stage. About a year ago I was horrified on a ride on Spaceship Earth. In the scene with the gigantic printing press and big ol' engine, there on the ground to the left by the first machine was a Home Depot 8 foot ladder! Just incredibly out of place with the old-timey scene! I pointed it out to CMs, but 4 days later it was still there!!! Someone reported that it was gone a couple weeks later, but it never should have been left there at all. Very very bad show!!!

They were. It's a useless "fix" that doesn't do a damn thing to actually fix the problem. But it's visible so guests feel better. It's the Disney equivalent of TSA full-body scans.

Great article Kevin. We need more constructive criticism of the way WDW is being run (into the ground). Keep up the pressure!

As far as the "fixes" go, sadly they amount to nothing more than pathetic patchjobs. We had to wait MORE THAN A YEAR for the ugly black tarp to disappear, only to be replaced with static rockwork?! That's not really a fix, it's actually a decline by degrees.

The truth is, the MK is a mess. Show quality has never been worse, the monorail system is woefully unreliable, and park operations are in sad, sad shape. Millions were spent on new queues for Small World and Space Mountain. But now they're loading SW backwards, so you can't really see the new queue, and at SM, half the guests are STILL being routed down that abysmal back hallway with bright lights and peeling paint.

The magic is fading at the Magic Kingdom. Maybe it can be restored, but only if people continue to spread the word.

Re: 7/5: Somebody Got the Memo

For what it's worth, a CM friend told me that the moving rocks at Thunder Mountain will not be coming back due to the accident that happened in Paris, where one of them fell and crashed into a train, injuring 5 people.

In a related note, the "ceiling alien" at Great Movie Ride was also turned off, again supposedly because of the Paris accident (CMs were told that all overhead effects were disabled until the investigation completed). After a few months it's back, which is a relief since that whole scene is nearly pointless without the alien.

The animatronic mouth thing really bugs me. A few weeks back, again at GMR, the Wicked Witch's mouth wasn't moving at all, totally killing the scene. Lame.

Anyway, glad they're fixing stuff. On my recent visit I was generally much more impressed with the state of MK than Epcot or DHS, which were in really poor condition.

FWIW - 3 weeks ago the ceiling alien wasn't working in GMR either.. only the alien in the side wall. At least on my ride through GMR on June 14

Yep, it was down for a few months, and that side alien only works at a fraction of how it worked when the ride first opened, and only for the 2nd car. So it was an uncomfortable minute slowly driving through that scene - after Ripley there was absolutely nothing happening in there. But luckily now the ceiling alien is back!

I also seem to remember the "second mouth" of the ceiling alien used to extend, just like in the movie. I haven't seen that happen in years, though.

Friends who've worked Big Thunder at Disneyland. The problem was with faulty maintenance of the couplings between cars, but removing the set of dummy drive wheels is a purely cosmetic thing and does nothing.
