I wish that Disneyland would give a back stage tour of the train and roundhouse. It's all very impressive.

Thank you very much. And I thought they did allow for backstage tours. But I may be mistaken. Either way, this was a great piece and I enjoyed it very much. Once again, thanks!!

They allow backstage roundhouse tours at WDW.

At DL, the roundhouse is strictly off-limits to guests.

Of course, the trade-off is that at DL, you can get cab (tender) rides. Can't do that at WDW!

GREAT ARTICLE!!! I have Steve's first DLRR book <3 and it's great, can't wait to talk my mom into letting me order the next one.

Cab rides are the best! I can't wait for mid June I'm heading to WDW and my first full day there I'm taking the tour I've wanted to do it for like 18 yrs now. Sadly they don't offer the tour becuase how close the roundhouse is to everything.

One thing that interested me was the "dead heading." I've never seen them do this, usually they say at mainstreet that the train is only going to toontown. has anyone seen them dead head before?

I have. It's an eerie sight to see the empty train steam through Frontierland Station without even slowing down!

Some people call Frontierland Station "New Orleans Square Station."

But some poeple call duck liver "foie gras."

Wonderful series. Thanks so much Steve for enlightening us on an attraction that most just take for granted. I've started dropping some major hints to my kids about your wanting your books for Father's Day! Again, thank you.

I enjoy Steve's articles to no end. Reading them feels like standing right there by the trains and having a personal mentor who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the topic, happy and patient about explaining all the details, and really good at explaining how everything works.

Thanks a million Steve, you're a great teacher and writer!

Wow! Had no idea how much time and work goes into steaming up those iron horsies, and preparing them to giddy up down the tracks each day.

Talk about a dramatic scene! ...my fave pic by far. The steam just attacks and envelopes the entire roundhouse. The dim lighting...soooooo cool.

Did you take some of these photos, Steve?

I'd forgotten that these trains move backwards. Just for novelty's sake, wouldn't it be fun if the park operated the trains backward one day. The could call the event, "Backtracking The Park". All Aboard! Hold On! Let's Ride!

Back during the construction of Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World, the trains did in fact run backwards. Frontierland Station was replaced as part of the construction, so the only two stations available were Main Street and Mickey's Starland (now Mickey's Toontown Fair).

Passengers could board at Mickey's Starland and ride forward to Main Street. Or they could board at Main Street and ride backward to Mickey's Starland. All passengers had to exit the train at each station, because of the greatly reduced capacity of only running one train.

Not quite "Backtracking the Park", but posters at the Magic Kingdom urged guests to "Ride the Rails in Reverse!"
