    Re: 5/16: Fort Wilderness Demolition

Hi folks! Long time lurker, decided to join after checking my answering machine today. Turns out my cousin called yesterday afternoon to tell his Disneyland-fanatic relatives that his demolition company got the job of tearing down Fort Wilderness. He said he has a meeting on Monday and that they're going to start on Tuesday.
He also, perhaps jokingly, perhaps not, extended an offer to let us work on it for free.

Update - Some details: He says they want it torn down by Friday, and it sounds like he's inviting us onto Tom Sawyer's Island, maybe a little backstage. They're working from 10pm-8am, using the two rafts to shuttle supplies back and forth constantly all night.

This is the sentence that is disturbing. The new fort will not be guest accessible. so it will once again be a building in the middle of the island with nothing to do.
This whole theme concept is a little too "Louisiana Bayou" ya know? It's Pirates of the Carribean. Why not build a model of the stone fortifications in San Juan where the move was shot? You can cast concrete just about anyway you want. Pull out some of the trees and plant palms. As far as losing something that Walt built I gotta tell you that there is little to suggest that Disney was about standing still and treating his park like an historic relic. He was all about promotion in a way that was fun and yet relevent to his audience.

Another update - they've found asbestos on the site, which will push the demolish back a couple weeks as they deal with all that. I guess it's a good thing it's been shuttered up for the past few years...

Ask your Cousin if the Fort Stockade is made out wood or concrete?

The movie wasn't shot in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Port Royal stone fortifications were built new and photographed at the long-defunct Marineland park in Palos Verdes, California. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates...k_Pearl#Design
