Excellent article. This movie is one of my favorites. Oddly, it has not been released in the United States on DVD. It was released on VHS in 1997. It needs to be cleaned up and released in a wide screen format on DVD.

Thanks for the extensive article on the back ground and hard work that when into making this great movie and the connection to Disneyland's Jungle Cruise.

Sigh, an action adventure with a drunken captain er... I mean "skipper."

Seriously, what part of this is NOT going to be compared to Pirates?

Why not make a JC movie that is in tune with the ride, you know... a comedy? Not a cheezy family comedy like Haunted Mansion, but like a real comedy. With stars like Steve Carrell, Jack Black and Will Farrell, the genre is a middle of a Golden Age, much like the Disney Animation of the early 90s. I've joked in the past that I have a funny feeling that Dane Cook is going to be in the JC movie... but at this point, I'd take that over another action adventure any time.

HEY DISNEY!!!! ACTION ADVENTURE SET IN THE JUNGLE?!!!! cough ::Congo :: cough cough ::Anaconda:: cough. Man, a lot of failure dust in here.

Thats what they said about pirates. "The pirates genre will never come back" but what do you know? Disney had the biggest movie franchise of all time on their hands...

"Very little is known about the film to date, other than a few tidbits that Oren Aviv, the President of Production at Walt Disney Studios, let slip when he described it as a “star-led, action adventure” in which a team of explorers enlist the services of a roguish riverboat captain to take them into the jungle in search of a rare flower with miraculous healing properties."

Roguish captain? Hmmm Kinda reminds me of Jack Sparrow already...

But what is up with a flower? Why can't it be about the team looking for a lost cruise in like in the ride? I can tell you this movie will flop hard if there arnt some fixes in the script and fast.

Seems a bit of a harsh judgement, I mean, cursed aztec gold? Many things sound bad on the page

Veryt cleverThat montage of images from the vertical pan of the African Queen to the Ocean was brilliant. It would make a great poster.

As much as I like Depp, he can't be the lead here. There would be far too many comparisons to Pirates. Cage would be a good choice but how about George Clooney?

Definitely no Depp! George Clooney, hmm, I'm not sure I can see him as a gruff sea captain. Cage maybe but a bit too obvious. What about Viggo Mortensen? Too low key maybe

I love Johnny of course, but I don't think he should (or would) do the film...if it has any chance of being a success, it has to be different from PotC.

Clooney? I think he would be a great choice...ladies, think of the best-looking men that you know will/are ageing well...

As for the plot...I've read that these individuals search for this healing flower because one of their friends is dying and needs the flower in order to survive. I think that's a fairly compelling plot point.

(Huston's) acting roles included the voice of Gandalf in the 1980 animated version of The Return Of The King, and that of the narrator in Disney’s The Black Cauldron (1985)."
Oh, he was also in this little thing called "Chinatown", but it never met with the critical and commercial success of the much more important films listed above.

I think if the new movie has the flavor of Romancing the Stone, then it can be both an adventure movie and funny at the same time. Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner did that kind of emotional energy that the African Queen had between Kate and Boggie. The new Jungle Cruise movie needs to be driven by the CHARACTERS not the action, just has you have pointed out. If they stay with that, then the movie will be a smash hit.

Thumbs up Re: 6/21: It's A Jungle Out There

Great story & film review. I love the idea of teh ride becoming a film. However your choice of actor (Nicolas Cage) is a horrible idea. Besides being one of the worst actors of all time (worse than Madonna IMO- and I actually like Madonna in a few of her films), he seems to just redo his character from "Valley Girl" in every performance. Always sounds teh same, acts the same & IS the same... IRRITATING like fingernails on the chalkboard. I despise him as an actor myself. Blech!

Casting ideas for alcoholic, ground-down, and sarcastic dry wit:
    4. Kurt Russell (classic Disney)
    3. James Woods
    2. Billy Bob Thorton
    1. Robert Downey Jr

    Re: 6/21: It's A Jungle Out There

Kurt Russel would be the PERFECT choice imho.
James Woods as well, as he has a great connection with Disney.

    Hm
    Flower.
Reminds me of that horrible animated film of "Once Upon A Forest"....

Nicholas Cage would be a horrible choice imo.
