Unfortunately a wide screen tv is a bad thing for this set, as the footage that is 16:9 or some other variation of widescreen does not display properly. You'll either get 4 black bars all around the screen or a stretched picture.

Amazing set so far, aside from that one issue, although I'm only about 15 minutes into it.

Edit: NNevermind...seems some of it displays properly and some doesn't. Still kinda disappointing

I watched it again last night and I didn't realize that the Disney characters did not appear at the park other than the opening ceremonies! I was shocked.

Is this because Walt Disney Productions did not own Disneyland at the time when it opened? I can't imagine a Disney park without the Disney characters.

Those characters that were seen on the opening day TV show were actually "borrowed" from Ringling Brothers Circus because at the time they had permission and paid for the rights to use those characters in there show. You can see them in the old Technicolor movie with Charlton Hestion and Jimmy Stewart (I can't remember the name right now) in the main show under the big top as filler characters that danced around the rings. When the TV show was over, Walt saw how popular the costumed characters where, so he had a whole Costumed Character workshop set up to make them for the Park, and of course over the years that department just grew and grew and also got better and better. I have never seen another non-Disney Theme Park with costumed characters as good as Disney's.

The Walt Disney Studios has always owned and operated Disneyland. Walt Disney World is operated by The Reedy Creek Development Company which is a company started by Walt just for the Florida Project. Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong are all owned by other companies but they pay a royalty to Disney for the use of the characters, names, rides, etc. Basically they pay for the construction and maintenance of the Parks and then pay Disney for the use of Disney Characters and attractions based on those characters, or other Disney property such as Jungle Cruise.

I heard that the costumes were "borrowed" from the Ice Capades.

Just a heads up in case you are tempted to skip "Building Walt's Dream - Disneyland Under Construction" in the bonus material. I thought this was going to be the time lapsed "Whistle While You Work" thing that we've all seen before.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

This to me, in spite of the fact that "People and Places" was phenomenal, is the highlight of the set. With Tony Baxter narrating, you get to see RARE footage of Walt, each section of the park being built, the Mark Twain being assembled, the ROA being filled, etc, etc, etc. The footage of Walt smoking a cigar, riding a bike through Disneyland, steering the Jungle Cruise boat...priceless. ... ...Finding how CLOSE they came to missing the deadline....

    Absolutely amazing.

I already had a number of Treasures DVDs, but this is far and away the best footage I've ever seen. THANK YOU, DISNEY, FOR RELEASING THIS AMAZING FOOTAGE!!

    So skyway...no. But something else?

I got mine yesterday and so Far I watched the main feature and did some of the Trivia...
Ohh I watched about 10 min of the "Disneyland USA" feature as well

Now, I'm pretty new to the Whole DLR Geek thing

I'm only been a HUGE fan for a year or so... (lifelong small fan though!)

I enjoyed it.. Some of the stuff I already knew.. But some of the stories that The Imagineers told were Great. This is totally worth the price so far and I haven't even watched half of it.

Re: Treasures DVD: Tony Baxter Adds Spark to Nostalgic but Uneven 'Disneyland Secrets

I got the DVD today from Amazon and will admit that the new documentary bored me towrads the end. There were things in it that I really enjoyed and found interesting, but then it started to drag on.

I mean, what did Tokyo Disneyland really have to do with it? That section could have been left out.

Plus, I thought they were going to include footage from the 50th anniversary ceremony for some odd reason. But I have yet to see it.

I did enjoy to Holiday show on the second disc. I didn't know what this Candle Light Processional thing was until I saw the DVD. The music gave me goosebumps .

I will probably watch another episode tonight and play another round of the game on Disc 1.

I have to confess , mine never made it under the tree. I preordered on Amazon telling my dh that he just brought me a wonderful Chrustmass present, he was way ok with that since he dosent love shopping for me. So it arrived and I left it on the kitchen counter and told him what came...he didnt offer to take it and wrap it , so it just kinda popped open and jumped into the dvd player... dh not very happy ! I love the part with Oscar from Carnation Cafe something about his voice is so fuzzy warm feeling. Love all the dvd.

Actually, we traditionally open presents on Christmas Eve so I'll be watching it as soon as I open it.

I think this was probably my favorite gift this year. I loved watching the time lapse footage of the park being built; it was just amazing that they could do so much in just 7 months. And seeing the park in 1956, so many things there that were gone even before my first visits (I think my avatar pic is from April `74 and I would have been two and a half).

The new documentary is too much of a commercial for my tastes. I like seeing the footage and hearing all the stories, but it was a bit too much.

I loved hearing Tony Baxter though. Makes me really want to get into the field.
