Surprise Parties; Do they ever work?

So I just pulled off a surprise 40th birthday party for a friend last night.

Me and two other girlfriends were in this together; we took our friend to dinner while the party was being set up. After dinner our friend received an "emergency" call to get to the location of the party "right away".

When she opened the door and saw the group of people, she closed it right away, turned around to us in utter shock; she had bought the whole act!! It was sweet!

So, have you ever planned a surprise party and actually had it work?

I planned a surprise 50th for my mom and she kinda' caught on. But the food surprised her. She knew people were coming over, didn't expect all the food and cake and cuteness.

Yep, we had a 60th for my mom. Instead going to her house for Sunday dinner per tradition, we decided to eat out one week under false pretenses. So instead of her meeting us for dinner, she walked into a giant surprise party with a casino theme and gaming tables and everything. It was so much fun!

Well, I haven't planned one but have been the recipient of one. I guess it worked since I had no clue that it was going to happen. It was rather funny though because we ended up with 3 cakes.

Belle planned a Surprise party for me for my (I think) 24th birthday. I actually figured it out a few days before.

I think it would have definitely been easier had it not been at our house, and I'm seeing the cleaning and the buying of stuff before the party.

Never gave one, but had one thrown one at me. I was totally surprised! Told them to never do that to me again.

Fishbulb and I just got back from a surprise party for my father's 60th birthday. He lives in Vermont and I rarely get to see him since I'm in LA.

My Step Mother arranged for my sister, Fishy, and Myself to surprise him at dinner at a beautiful Inn on Lake Champlain. We were sitting on the lawn watching the sun set over the lake when my step mother approached with my dad. He didn't even realize that the people on the lawn were his kids until we jumped up and started hugging him. He was shocked and thrilled and was teary eyed all night.

I think the surprise worked in a good way. It was a magical memory.

I threw one for Tim on his 40th birthday. He had no clue about it and informed me afterwards to never surprise him like that again.

I LOVE hearing about everyone's experiences with surprise parties; thanks for sharing.

This party was so much fun to plan; we had so many people involved-I think that was why it worked. Everyone deserves at least one surprise party in their lifetime!

Yes, I threw one for my Husbands 30th birthday and it went off without a hitch!

It was held at one of our best friends houses. He planned to go over to watch a boxing match. I said I was staying home with a migraine, so he did not even expect me there. I also said I was working overtime that Saturday, but I was really at our friends setting up.

My cousins threw a surprise anniversary party for my aunt & uncle one year. They totally bought it too.
