Smelly cat!

Okay, this is a rather odd question...but, my husband has been bugging me to ask other cat owners.

We got a kitten (3 months old) about three weeks ago. Now, this cat REEKS! I mean, the paint is peeling off the spare room's walls (not literally). This accounts for why I have been MIA on Micechat for a while. The computer desk is right next to the litterbox....and the smell is SO bad...air freshner runs from it.

So, here's the question...do you have this problem? What kind of litter do you use? What kind of food do you feed them? Any tips for how to get rid of this ungodly smell????

THANK YOU!

Re: Smelly cat!

Congrats on the kitten!

Sadly, kitten poo smells REALLY bad...their digestive tracks are on overload and if you are feeding him wet food, it will make it smell worse!

Does he scarf down his food or just pick at it? Is he drinking enough water?

I've had plenty of cats thru the years and I've never fed them wet food. They get just dry kibble. Kitten kibble until 1 year and then over to regular indoor dry (my cat's don't go outside).

I know this sounds gross but if it's really runny and you see anything
dis-colored about his poo, i'd talk to your vet.

Re: Smelly cat!

Is it just the litter box (and its contents) that smell, or does the kitten actually smell? If it is just the box, CinderellaPrincess is spot on. I only feed my kitties dry food and I use Scoop Away Kitty litter. Nothing will be odor free, but I think it is pretty good.

Re: Smelly cat!

Well, he smells.....he has gas and poots around the house quite often. haha. But, he seems perfectly healthy. We feed him Science Diet and it is the dry stuff. He eats regularly, he takes his time, and drinks LOTS of water. I peeked in the box, and it looks normal....it's just SOOOOO smelly!

Re: Smelly cat!

Sounds like his system is still trying to adjust to the food you are giving him. Our dog was the same way when we first got her, and she is fine now.

Re: Smelly cat!

Then welcome to the world of owning a kitten!

Kitten poo stinks and so does their gas!

My Mom just got a new kitten too and she's the same way!

Everytime that cat moves she leaves an ill smelling cloud behind her!

He'll grow out of it. It will just take a few months.

Kitten!!

Well, the advice so far has been spot on so I'll just reiterate the demand for pictures.

Re: Smelly cat!

Stinky kitty? Give him a bath! He'll probably hate you for a few hours after but even though cats are self-cleaning for the most part, they do need a regular bath once in a blue moon.

Ok I have 2 cats that I raised from 6-8 week old kittens (one will be 8 this weekend and the other turned 1 in April) and I know how smelly their poo is. I use Tidy Cats instant odor control clumping litter. You may have to clean the litterbox at least once a day for awhile while his system gets adjusted. Another odor eater.... sprinkle some Arm & Hammer baking soda into the litterbox to soak up some of the smell.

Sometimes I think I should've named my cats "Sir Poops-A-Lot". They're a couple of little stinkers! My little stinky, pooping furballs.

On a side note.... cat pee is RANCID!

Re: Smelly cat!

This is the only picture I have on the computer so far....I need to download more.

THAT is Capt. Jack Sparrow. (our daughter named him. I swear!) We call him Jack for short.

Aimster....tell me about it!!! He peed on our couch the second day we had him. He didn't like the lid on his litter box, and peed on my couch in protest. It took 2 weeks and TONS of Nature's Miracle to get most of it out.
