To Get GPS, Or Not To Get GPS - That Is The Question...

Hi all. The 2009 Honda Fit FINALLY came out...woho. I've been saving up for a LONG time to get one and now I have the delema of deciding if I should get a GPS installed in it or not. It is now an option in the new Fit.

My question is:
If you have a GPS system, do you use it a lot?
Is it worth the money (+$2,000) ?
Would you suggest I get one added in?
Comments,ect?

I'm looking into purchasing a Fit within 1 - 6 months.

$2000? I'd just get a portable one and save a bunch of money!
Of course, I'd never buy a car right off the lot either.

I have GPS on my Blackberry and I love it. I use it quite often.

I agree with others and say get a portable one. You can get a decent one as cheap as $150 these days. I'm debating about getting one for the BF for Christmas because he is LOUSY at giving directions.

Get a portable one. You can get it for under $500. We have one and we used it on our driving vacation this summer and it saved our butts numerous times!! It still helps if we are going somewhere unfamiliar and we miss a turn and map quest paper directions won't help if you miss a turn or there is construction.

It's worth the money, trust me.

Hmmm, most people have said to get a portable GPS - but what is the difference of getting a potable one and a stationary one.

Re: To Get GPS, Or Not To Get GPS - That Is The Question...

Years ago people used to drive around with portable stereos in their car or they hooked on up under the dash because the factory option was poor or expensive. The GPS factory/portable is sort of another generation of that argument. Mine comes with traffic watch which can be a real help and the software will often give you route ideas that you did not contemplate that turn out to save boatloads of time.

If you're already buying your car new off the lot, and you plan to keep it for a number of years. Pimp it out with as many accessories as your budget will allow. Factory installed GPS is miles better than portable, IMHO. Looks better, sounds better, performs better.

Portability! You can use it in more than one vehicle.

Plus you can hook it up to your computer and put in custom POI's and maps of places you need for a vacation via google earth.

Portable. Have one, use it occasionally, worth it though for those certain times. Wifes used it more than me.

my parent's factory installed GPS sucks. Mine portable one works way better and is more reliable.

Also, this part just annoys the heck out of me and I know it's a safety thing, but she has to be stopped to set it. Once we're at destination it just stops working.....however, she missed destination a couple of times and had to pull over to reset it. Huge PITA!!!...mine can be set while driving...of course I don't try to drive and set it, but the passenger can and that is really helpful. If I make a wrong turn or pass destination my portable one quickly recalculates the route...my parent's takes forever to do that. (well, if the pass destination it won;t even bother to recalculate. it has to be reset. )

IDK, my only expereince has been the factory installed version my parents have and my portable one. I prefer mne. i

If you do get a portable, which does have the advantage of being used in any care, just remember to never, ever leave it in sight in your car. That is a sure fire way to have a smashed window and loose your navigator.

You hit the nail on the head. People will take anything of value. I learned that the first time when I forgot and left a bag from a local jewelry store in the back seat - there wasn't anything in it, but someone decided they would find out.
