Marc, the more I think about it, I wonder if it was a former employee. I know having been in your business that your office is not one of the first places I would notice. Did the video camera catch anything?

How frustrating! I'm hoping the "stupid criminal" video tape gives the police a good look at the perpetrators!

No, we have had the former employee thing quite a few times before. The police that responded said that it was the forth time this type of break in has occurred in the area in two nights. They knew what they were doing, the video on the perimeter showed them driving around the building and then parking in the upper lot to watch the place for about 10 minutes before actually pulling down in front and do their business. It was a classic snatch and grab, they were in and out within 2 minutes and knew the police response time would be more than 5 minutes.

The talking with the monitoring company they broke the front glass door with a piece of river rock. (Glass break sensor activates) front door opened (door sensor activates) they come in (main long range motion picks them up) they go to the front desk (hall motion gets them) and open all the drawers looking for a cash register (stupid criminals, money is in vault that is steel and brick) turn around see my office door which is labelled "Authorized.....only" and go gee, must be good. Kick door in (tech door alarm set off) grab 3 laptops (yes three, I forgot one) and the camera (sets off tech department motion) runs back out front and takes off.

Police show up 4 minutes after last alarm activation. There was video and I have turned it over to the police so we will see where it goes. The hardest part was the police clearing the scene. For those that have been to my office you can understand how it must be a nightmare for the police to go room to room and scan the courtyards for people hiding.

I'll tell you what, the items they took off with don't mean a thing. We have insurance and it will be replaced. Our office used to be in a bad part of town and I let my guard down and this just let's me know that I shouldn't have. It's the feeling of someone violating you, coming in and going through your stuff and you are completely helpless to take any action.

Thanks everyone for your support, it really sucks and it makes me understand how victims feel when bad people do bad things.

What do you mean you let your guard down? Sounds like you had as much security as you could muster and they still broke in. If someone determined to commit a crime there's not much that will stop them.

Would be nice if the police could use a reverse 911 system to alert business owners when a rash of crimes are occuring in their neighborhood.

I'm so sorry this happened to you guys. I hope they do catch the guys. Was there anything unique about your stuff that you would be able to recognize it if it showed up on Craig's List or at a local pawn shop/computer store or anything like that?

Being victimized like that feels horrible but please don't beat yourself up over it. Sadly, it is sometimes just the price of doing business and that's why we have insurance.

I hope you guys are able to settle back in quickly and that it doesn't interrupt your business too much more.

Hopefully the video will turn up with something. If there's footage of the vehicle driving around, maybe they can get the licence plate number.
