Do you read the newspaper?

The world is a different place than the one that I grew up in. There's the internet, television, radio, and now people can even access the web on their cell phones. Which brings me back to my question.

Do you read the newspaper?

I have the Chicago Sun Times delivered to my doorstep each and every morning. I admit that I don't read it from cover to cover, but the day just doesn't seem complete if I don't look at my newspaper.

So how do you get your news?

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

I actually try to avoid the news like its the plague. It's just depressing. Who needs that? Besides, if it's REALLY important, you can't avoid it.

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

^^ Same here. But my complex gets free Sunday papers. I'll usually pick one up for the ads and the coupons. And the comics. I don't even look at the rest.

Only time I'll go out of my way to buy a newspaper is if I know there's going to be something in it that I want to see. Like when the Rays were in the playoffs/World Series.

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

I like to scan through our campus newspaper. I am also taking a business class so I have to start reading The Wall Street Journal on a weekly basis.

I only get the paper on the weekends now. During the week at work I just read it on the internet.

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

I especially enjoyed yesterday's paper. It held a copy of the Inauguration Address of our new President. Today's paper has returned back to normal with a smaller sampling of Presidental news, and more of the usual Chicago happenings.

It does seem that the newspaper sometimes reports too much "bad" news and not enough of the good things that happen in the world.

I remember when I was in High School. In one of my classes, we were required to read the newspaper every day, and the teacher even tested our knowledge of current events. I usually passed. Not too sure that I could do that today.

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

I actually do flip through the base's newspaper. Occasionally. It comes out once a week. I'll flip through to see if there's anything happening on base that I'm interested in. Usually, they have holiday festivals, that kind of thing. Sometimes, it just sits in the driveway though, and gets run over with the car. I did pick it last night....to throw it in the garbage can.

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

I get the paper delivered every day and read it at lunchtime. I let it lapse for a few months ago, and realized I was losing touch with what's going on in the world. What I was seeing was limited to the top 3-4 news items that I would see on my internet home page. And, no local news at all. So, I renewed my subscription and although I don't read most of the stories more than 1-2 paragraphs into the article, that's enough to keep me informed.

Besides, I was missing the story lines on all my favorite cartoons

Nope, haven't for years.

My MIL however reads the paper from cover-to-cover daily. Every story.

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

This is going to sound sick but I cancelled my subscription because my stupid paper delivery person kept throwing it in the sprinklers. After 20 times of having a sopping paper I had enough. So I read it when I have one available.

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

I was a journalism major, section editor and editor-in-chief of a college newspaper, and for a time worked at a large local daily, so I'm really ashamed to say that I don't currently subscribe to a newspaper. I used to get the LA Times, but budget cuts have hurt their reporting and they seem to have shifted a lot of their news focus to current events in Mexico, and of course "the biz". I might get the Thurs-Sun again.

Local papers are just too amateurish. The writing makes me cringe, and I just don't have enough free time to read about a Girl Scout troop's bake sale.

I usually read some LATimes articles online, and I frequently check the NY Times and a few other major news sources online as well. I'm a bit of a news junkie. I watch local news on television in the morning, then if I can, I watch some national in the afternoon/evening and try to catch the 'ultimate' news, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report at night. I get breaking news updates on my phone, and read more articles there, too.

You're right, Barbaraann, the newspaper as we know it is gone and not likely to return.

I used to read both of those every weekday... I really miss them!

I also subscribe Fri, Sat, and Sun, mostly for the coupons and because I just love Sunday's paper in general LOL That is enough for me. I skim the local and world stuff, way too much nightmare and anxiety inducing stories.

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

I skim read the LA Times, which I have delivered, and the Ventura County Star (on-line). I also subscribe to an internet service that scans various sports pages across the country, and I read many of those.

I go to the sports page first (big surprise) but I try to make sure to scan the other sections as well.

I was editor-in-chief of my community college paper, and also briefly wrote for Cal State Fullerton's Daily Titan before pursuing a broadcasting career.

Newspapers, by the way, don't presently nearly as negative a view of the world as televison news does...especially local TV news.

Re: Do you read the newspaper?

I read the local paper, the Arizona Republic and the Fri, Sat, Sun LA Times. I also read the post and Daily News online. I am a news junkie. I used to just read the Courier (local paper in Prescott) but they wanted to do all happy news and honestly I wanted to be well informed, not just happy when I read the paper. Plus their spelling and grammar is horrible.

I understand how some people don't like reading the news because it's too depressing, but that's life. It has it's bake sales, and 75th anniversaries, but it also has it's rockets crashing through schools and it's serial killings. That's just life. I am not opposed to anyone who doesn't read the paper because of the bad news, I just do not wish to live my life uninformed to that extent. Maybe if real life was better than the news wouldn't be so bad?
