Never had to discuss it with Paige, I've always known both gay men and women since way before she was born. My mom's best friend Vince when I was a little kid was gay. My Uncle Robert is gay. We've been immersed in gayness her whole life, and it's never been anything that needed to be explained or examined.

Our kids haven't mentioned anything about it yet. We have Gay friends, my Mom is gay (although not with anybody) so I'm sure it will come up eventually. And I'm sure they will be fine with it.

My mother will probably raise my little sisters to tell them it's wrong. It's too bad really. And I'll have no way to prove it wrong, because the type of women I'm interested in are WAY too cool to humor me.

We never needed to have a "talk" about it. My kids were always around gay folk and it never occurred to them that same gender couples were at all unusual.
Kids will take the cue from the parents. If it's treated as normal and natural, the kid most likely will too.

Re: Has anyone ever explained "gay" to their kids?

I remember making some stupid junior high school comment in front of my Mother when I was in, well, junior high. I don't recall exactly what she said, but she made it very clear that it wasn't acceptable or correct. It is an event that pretty much defined my views on the subject.

At some point, both of my kids have asked what "gay" means. I just explained that sometimes a man loves a man, or a woman loves a woman, the way that I love their Mommy. I think the follow-up with both was "why?" I think that they both accepted my explanation that it was just part of who they are.

Re: Has anyone ever explained "gay" to their kids?

Maybe there's a pseudo gay-ish character in one of the Disney films? One that isn't the villian? That might be one to use as a point of reference.

Of course, the sad thing is...I can't think of any right now.

    Scary.

    Peace.

I think we have previously established that the gayest-non-villain-disney character is Lilo.

Sorry if I'm repeating a conversation from elsewhere. It just popped into my head. Thanks, tho! I never thought of Lilo. Good choice.

    Peace to you.

i feel that having to expain gay is like having to explain why people have blue eyes. or brown eyes... it's something that god gave us to be born with and we are all beautiful at birth. it's how we treat others afterwards that matters.
    please be afraid.

Re: Has anyone ever explained "gay" to their kids?

I was just watching an episode of the 80's sit-com "The Charmings" ~
A Story about Snow White, Prince Charming, their two young sons,
a dwarf, the Evil Queen - Lillian White, and the Magic mirror All
falling asleep for 1,000 years and waking up in the 1980's USA.

Anyway, Snow is explaining to her husband, Prince Charming, that
her boss is gay. Snow whispers something in the Prince's ear, and
    he say's "Oh, like Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee!"
