Next year, I'll give it a try. I haven't had one since I was a kid.

Whoopie pies are absolutely the best. Usually, they are made of two moist chocolate cakes (round) and are sandwiched together with a creamy, white filling. The local grocery stores carry them, but the filling is horrible. The Amish make them the best. I'm sure the cream filling is all kinds of bad for you. It's worth it, though. Recently, the Amish started to make new varieties. Chocolate cake with peanut butter filling, Peanut butter cake with white filling, banana cake with white filling, and pumpkin cake with white filling during the fall. I'm sure there are more combinations, too.

Pickled beet eggs are sooo good, too. If you like beets, then these are right up your alley They are made with beets, water, vinegar, sugar, and hard boiled eggs. A month or so ago, I tried to make them not too long ago (we don't use a recipe), but they were way too tart. My Mom can make them just right every time. I love them in salads.

I did not, however, make any special prune pazcki preparations for Lent. I'm sure I'll check back later to see if honoraryhatter gives us the scoop on whoopie pie!
I agree. The pazcki, aebleskiver, and apple cider doughnuts sound soooo good. If your starting the traditional fast, it may be a good idea to avoid the thread. until your finished

D'OH! Too late.

I couldn't resist seeing if you posted about the whoopie pie. I've had tea and water today. The beet eggs sound best right now, but it all sounds delicious!

Re: Happy Fasnacht Day!

we used to have a pancake dinner at my church (ucc) for either the youth or the whole congregation... we called it fat tuesday, shrove tuesday, and pancake tuesday as well as mardi gras (we'd get cheap mardi gras decorations from oriental trading). i knew about king's cake, but i'd never heard of the two other foods you guys mentioned for this holiday!

i didn't do anything to celebrate it this year. i was going to go get the free pancakes at ihop, but by the time i remembered it was too late (my local ihop stops serving them way early).

Re: Happy Fasnacht Day!

I found a Polish deli here in Clearwater that has fresh-made paczki every Saturday!
