Happy Fasnacht Day!

Since it is the day before Ash Wednesday, we celebrate Fasnacht Day in some parts of Pennsylvania. It is otherwise known as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday. It may have other names, too.

In my area of Pennsylania, we celebrate it by going out to get a fasnacht, a powdered doughnut made with a yeast and potato batter. Our local Dunkin Donuts chain makes fasnachts for only this day. I'm not a big fan of them so I just get a regular doughnut and a real good cup of coffee.

Does anyone on Micechat celebrate Fasnacht Day, Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday? How do you celebrate it?

I've heard of Fat Tuesday but the rest....never heard of them! We don't celebrate any of it that I am aware in Seattle.

Shrove Tuesday means a pancake supper at my house. Our church also serves the traditional pancake supper on the eve of Ash Wednesday.

I'd definitely be willing to try a fasnacht! And fully intend to, if I ever find myself in that part of Pennsylvania on Fasnacht Day.

I'm from Louisiana, so we usually celebrate Mardi Gras today. We usually went to a parade, and ate lots of King Cake. Yummmmm.

Re: Happy Fasnacht Day!

My family and I went to Dunkin Donuts in the afternoon. My Mom and sister got coffee and a muffin. My other sister got a fasnacht and a dunkachino (coffee and hot chocolate mixed). I got a cup of coffee and a powdered cinnamon doughnut .... YUM!

My sister got the fasnacht for her first time. She really liked it. She said that it tasted like a powdered doughnut, but it was way more moist. She'll get it again next Fasnacht Day. Perhaps, I'll give it a try next year since it's too late for this year.

If you ever find yourself in this part of Pennsylvania and it isn't Fasnacht Day, there's always other Pennsylvania Dutch foods to try like whoopie pies and pickled (beet) eggs. There are others, but I think those ones stand out the most.

Re: Happy Fasnacht Day!

I found paczkis at Publix! They're all custard-filled though. I like the lemon-filled ones. They're not as good as the ones up north (glazed instead of powdered sugar coating), but I'll take what I can get down here. Bad enough I can't get apple cider donuts & pumpkin donuts here in the fall.

Traditional pazcki are prune-filled... to help clean out your system at the end of the day so you're ready for Lent.

I never heard of pazcki until you posted about it. Hopefully, you'll be able to find those lemon-filled ones next year

Our Dunkin Donuts had the pumpkin spice doughnuts in the fall. They were really good. This year, they had cinnamon covered pumpkin spice, and I thought I couldn't love the pumpkin spice more. I never tried an apple cider doughnut, but it sounds absolutely divine.

Re: Happy Fasnacht Day!

I've never seen apple cider donuts anywhere outside of Michigan. They use apple cider in the dough.

That sounds yummy, I totally think you should try it.

Dare I ask what a whoopie pie is? I know I could Google it, but it would be more fun if you told us! As for pickled-beet eggs, yes, I would try that too. I love beets.

Nummy! Both sound really delish.

Everything sounds good when you're hungry. I think I need to keep out of this thread until tomorrow, since I am doing the traditional fast today, and y'all are talking about some tasty stuff. I did not, however, make any special prune pazcki preparations for Lent. I'm sure I'll check back later to see if honoraryhatter gives us the scoop on whoopie pie!

Re: Happy Fasnacht Day!

If any of you are in California, if you drive 3 hours northwest of Disneyland you will come across a town called Solvang where they sell pastries called aebleskivers in many of their bakeries.

An aebleskiver is like a combination between a pancake and a donut hole and often covered with jam or powdered sugar. They are so yummy!

These are sold all year round by the way.

I had a whoppie pie before, they are awesome. My mom said she got them from some Amish town.
