Earthquake! In Oklahoma?

Yep. You read that right. I woke up this morning to my bed shaking like one of those vibrating mattresses in a cheapo motel. At first, I thought our ginormous cat decided to pounce near me. Then, I heard the bedroom door shaking violently. Now, I'm from Louisiana. I have never experienced an earthquake. I'm used to hurricanes. So, I rolled over and went back to sleep.By the time I woke up I had convinced myself it was all a dream. That is...until we went to church. The preacher (who's also from Louisiana) was talking about how the weather constantly changes in OKlahoma...throwing in tornados, ice storms.....and earthquakes. Then, I realized.....it wasn't a dream. It was a nightmare.

I had to laugh about it, since I already don't like Ok. And I've long said that there's NO way I could live in California...cause I don't want to deal with earthquakes. Those just go beyond what my basic beliefs are. You know....it's the ground...it's not supposed to move. But, here I am...in Ok....with a 3.6. Nice.

So, now, I am.....tallying up my life experiences with weather. I was born in a blizzard in West Virginia. Lived through Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Moved to Oklahoma and the next week they had the biggest ice storm in their history....and now.....earthquakes.

I'm ready to move to Japan for the typhoons now. That will complete my bingo card.

Just proves what the scientists always say... earthquakes can happen anywhere. Not just California!

We don't even notice a little 3.6 here.

Wow, I never knew earthquakes happened in Oklahoma! I'm glad you're alright - 3.6 isn't very big but I'm still glad nothing major happened. Earthquakes are a rare occurrence up where I am, but I would take an earthquake any day vs. a hurricane or ice storm.

Re: Earthquake! In Oklahoma?

We had occasional minor earthquakes in Michigan when I was growing up. I think we've even had a couple here in Florida since I moved here.

Re: Earthquake! In Oklahoma?

Actually some of the most powerful earthquakes in the US were in the midwest, the most famous are what are a series of four called the New Madrid quakes back in 1811 and 1812; 8.1, 7.8, 7.4 and 7.0 on the richter scale.

The course of the Mississippi permanently changed and land that was once on one side of the river, ended up on the opposite side of the riverbed.

Me too! Earthquakes... at least BIG earthquakes only happen every few years. Ice storms, tornados etc, happen all the time.

Yup. There are faults all over the country, its just California gets all the press because our faults seem to be the most active. Take that which ever way you want.

The Pacific Northwest is actually another area that has the potential for extreme earthquake activity.

Re: Earthquake! In Oklahoma?

Congrats on experiencing your first earthquake. Sounds like it was just a little one . When we have the little ones, I'm also thankful because I figure that's taking some pressure off the fault line so we won't have a really big one.

Re: Earthquake! In Oklahoma?

LOL know all about earthquakes in odd states..we had one here in ky a while back..I remember saying to a friend that the sky was unusually blue and it was a bit hotter than normal I said boy, looks like earthquake weather! the neighbors dog sat on our front porch barking and carrying on, and the horses were flipping out, trying not to stay in one place too long

then sure enough early the next morning I wake up to shaking..now I am born n raised so cal the first thing I thought was earthquake...my old habit of looking at water glasses or light fixtures to see if they are shaking automatically kicked in, I thought naw..couldn't be..then I blamed the dog for scratching and shaking the bed I went back to sleep it turned out to be...yep my old pal the earthquake!

everyone FREAKED out it was a little one a 3 something if I remember correctly I laughed so hard the whole day cause people calling in to the local tv station were the funniest ever..things like omg it was HORRIBLE and other stupid things...I told the bf that itty bitty thing would have been a fart on the San Andreas fault! much less make everyone lose it! then, I suddenly turned into the earthquake expert..everyone we knew asking if there would be more, what a ricter scale was, how big of ones I went though, things like that..I teased the bf so much for freaking out...I told him that he would have had a stroke during the big bear quake in the 90's and the one that cracked our inground pool when I was a kid back in the 70's

I ended up apologizing to the dog later! LOL

but, what really sucks is tornadoes!! those scare the crap out of me...wind is not supposed to be able to kill you! and now a close second are ice storms! that was the pits..no power for 2 days, freezing my butt off trying to help my tanks of fish live though it listening to trees cracking all around us and one barely missing taking out my car!

now I know what mom meant when she said she would take an earthquake over a tornado any time (she was from Kansas) now I have to add ice storms to the list!

Re: Earthquake! In Oklahoma?

I never understood why people are so afraid of coming out here to California all because of earthquakes. I much prefer an occasional quake with little damage to a HURICANE or something like that with MUCH more damage every few years.

Re: Earthquake! In Oklahoma?

Groomer...your post was hilarious! I have to admit...I am freaked out by tornadoes too. I grew up in the south..so, I'm used to hurricanes. Heck...I dealt with Katrina! But, at least with hurricanes...you have a three day warning to get the heck outta Dodge! With tornadoes..there's little to no warning. That scares me. Thankfully, we haven't had a bad one since we moved here. They have skipped over our part of town.

Re: Earthquake! In Oklahoma?

There was that earthquake in April last year that spread to like all of the midwest, I can't remember where it hit though. Anyway... I woke up twice and thought my bed was swaying, but figured it was a dream. When I got up the next morning I told my dad and he pointed to the news, where they were reporting about the earthquake.

So, I have officially felt an earthquake. In Kansas.

Re: Earthquake! In Oklahoma?

A 3.6 earthquake gets our attention - because that could be the opening wave of an 8-pointer. Get in a doorway and hope it stops by the time you get there.

In the midwest I would be more worried about having a good storm cellar built, because you usually get a minute or two warning - sometimes fifteen or more. Having the wind pushing 2X4 lumber that's punching through concrete block walls is not a good thing...

Hint: If you build a block room in the basement, you have to laminate the armor - plate steel over filled concrete block.
