Are you Irish? - Happy St. Patrick's Day

I don't have a drop of Irish blood in me, but there are a lot of Irish people in the city of Chicago where I live. Growing up in a northside neighborhood, we lived across the street from an Irish family. Mom and dad were born in Ireland and had a lot of children all with Irish names.

I remember when the St. Patrick's Day Parade was always held on March the 17th. This year it was conveniently held on Saturday instead, so more people could attend. They still dye the Chicago River green in honor of the Irish. I have never gone to a parade, I have always enjoyed hearing about them, and watching the politicians marching in them on the nightly news.

McDonald's sells Shamrock Shakes in honor of the Irish, but why were they out of them, when we tried to buy one this past Saturday? Surely they could prepare better than that.

In high school someone was always selling green carnations on March the 17th.

Are you wearing green today? Are you Irish?

    Have a great day.

I'm majorly Irish. I got dressed today (gray cordoroys, white undershirt, and red thermal) only to realize "crud..." Have to figure out what matches now. And what was funny was last night I was trying to get my outfit together and I kept picking up green t-shirts and thinking "I don't want to wear green tomorrow!"

I do have some Irish in me, has my great great great grandfather (I think I have enough greats in there) on my fathers side came over from Ireland in the late 1800's. There is also a bit of Irish on my mothers side, but I haven't been able to trace that back or have it documented as well as my fathers side.

I have a little Irish in me but I'm not wearing green today. I'm in a monochromatic mood today.

Michelle Obama, the wife of our newest President came up with the idea to dye the water in the White House Fountains green today. It looks really cool. They are showing it on my 11 a.m. news program.

I'm not Irish, but DIP Jr has some.

He would be half Italian (from me) and the rest English, Welsh, German, and IRISH.

So that makes him what? An eighth Irish?

Re: Are you Irish? - Happy St. Patrick's Day

I am half Irish---probably why I'm a writer---on my mother's side. Her great-great grandfather, I guess, came from County Down outside of Belfast. My family was encouraged to wear both orange and green, being they represented the whole of Ireland but all American.

My mother is serving corned beef and stinkie cabbage tonight. I'm not one for the stuff, frankly. However, I have a massive cold in my nose and I'm miserable. I'm tempted to make it, for, with a cold, it will taste halfway decent.

Instead, I'll just make some fish and chips, I'm sure.

Is it wrong to claim a little Irish on St. Patrick's Day, even if you're not sure?

Re: Are you Irish? - Happy St. Patrick's Day

Well, I do have some Irish, but I am much more Scottish to be sure. You can tell by all my freckles! lol

My family thought we had a lot of Irish, but when my uncle went to a Celtic Faire in PA, he saw a name book that had all the different original names of the Scots, and then would show the name they changed to when they became citizens. He found out then that Gilpatrick(my maiden name) was Scottish instead!
