The trouble with ticks

It's that season again. Our dog had about 25-30 yesterday and today total. I know how to get them off and to clean the area afterward with rubbing alcohol, etc. I hate doing it. She got a haircut today but they didn't do too good, so we are getting her shaved tomorrow so that might help and make it easier since her hair was getting long.

But how do you keep them off your dog? What kind of product do you use? We use frontline and used it last month and this month but she still got them and were alive. We've cut the grass short in the back, we've washed and vacuumed almost everything in sight, bedding, toys, blankets, carpets.

What can we do?

IDK, thankfully where I live we don't get fleas and ticks are only out in the wild areas. We don't go there.

Re: The trouble with ticks

now where we are, there are tons of fleas and ticks. instead of using flea shampoo, we use Dawn dishwashing liquid...the fleas drop off dead really quick. now preventing against them, I'm really not sure. My horses are sprayed with a fly spray that's supposed to help.

Re: The trouble with ticks

I can't believe your dog had 25 - 30 ticks yesterday and today Last year, one of our dogs got one, and I got one on me shortly after that, and it wasn't fun at all. We got them out, but I never want to experience it again. My sister found a tick on her dog about a week ago, and she took her dog to the veterinarian because she was acting strange. After some tests, they found out her dog got lime's disease from the tick

Anyway, for preventing fleas/ticks, we used to use Frontline from the veterinarian, but we have three dogs and a cat. Now, we use Adam's, which does the same thing. Since you are using Frontline, I would try to tackle the problem in the yard. Perhaps, you could try a spray or power for killing the ticks/fleas in the yard so that it can reduce the numbers.

yeah, I'd check at Home Depot or Lowe's and find a spray to spray your yard with. I'm sure they have one...they have stuff that kills everything. We use one on our yard that specializes in spiders, since Oklahoma has wolf spider ~shivers~. And it works great.

Re: The trouble with ticks

I'm so glad my cats are indoor cats. Never had a flea/tick problem with either of them.

Keeping your yard trim and short, using frontline, and monitoring are your best defenses. Keeping the dog's haircut short will greatly help also. Might not be the most fashionable, but hair grows back.

Eeeww those are nasty!

Pretty much what everyone else said. Home improvement stores tend to have a spray or powder to rid your home of just about anything. Thankfully my cats and dogs have never gotten ticks, just lots of foxtails. The dogs find a patch and roll in it. They pop up faster than we can get rid of them.
