When will people learn?

My son is a ride operator at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Earlier today he was running the Hurricane roller coaster and just as he was about to press the start button, a kid hopped a fence and jumped ON the tracks to retrieve his baseball cap which had blown off during the ride. It's a good thing my son saw him or the guy would probably be injured or dead.

When Kyle scolded the kid and told him how dangerous what he'd done was, the kid took off running. But the security guard caught him and kicked him out of the park. He is an extremely lucky that nothing worse happened to him!

Re: When will people learn?

Jeez...people are insane. You'd think they would have more common sense - he is lucky that your son saw him just in time. That wouldn't have been a pretty picture.

People never learn. You can replace the stupid hat for crying out loud. Or hey, let the attendant know and they can get it later. That kid could have ended up like the man at Great America in Santa Clara a few years ago that was killed when he hopped the fence at Top Gun to get his wifes hat. People leave their common sense at home I guess if they have any.

Re: When will people learn?

It's amazing how people will risk their life for a baseball cap that probably costs only $10-15. One can only hope that the kid will learn his lesson.

I think my son was more angry than traumatized. Angry because if the kid HAD got hit by the train, my son wouldn't want to be in any way responsible for his death or injury even though it wouldn't be his fault. But the kids' parents probably would have tried to sue the Boardwalk and my son anyways.

I agree that kids sometimes do stupid things. Heck, adults too. I just hope enough people have heard about people being injured or killed because of hopping over fences to retrieve hats so that they'll think twice before doing the same.

Exactly.

It seems that my son deals with some stupid activity at least once a week.

Last week, a guy in the front car on the Giant Dipper sprayed pepper spray in the air and it went straight into the eyes of a guy in the 4th row. When the ride stopped, the guy in the 4th row yanked his safety bar off and started looking around for something to beat up the guy in the front car. The guy in the front car was screaming to my son "Let me out, let me out or he'll hurt me." My son let him out and he took off but security was waiting at the exit for him and the other guy.

Re: When will people learn?

This is why at Busch Gardens they won't let you take ANY loose articles on the roller coasters. They'll turn you away at the entrance to the queue and make you rent a locker. I saw one employee stationed at the entrance to Sheikra turn away 5 people because they were wearing hats or fanny packs (they allowed glasses if someone needed them to see but that was it). They mean business... and I'm glad they do. Some stupid kid next to me got his phone out of his pocket at the end of the ride but then it slipped out of his hand and fell onto a part of the coaster train that the floor covers during load/unload (it's a floorless coaster). He told a ride attendant, who said, "Sorry, can't do anything about that. When we say no loose articles, we mean it." I wanted to hi-five him.
