    Favorite Childhood TV Show?

There's more to this discussion than what the topic title suggests, so allow me to elaborate:

I’m a fairly nostalgic person and was talking about childhood TV shows with some friends. We were all discussing our memories of certain shows and saying just how great they were. I was born in 1988 and have my fondest TV memories with shows from the mid 90’s to the late 90’s/early 2000’s. (ie:Rugrats, Powerpuff Girls, Power Rangers to name a few). My friends and I were also discussing how we thought a lot of the shows of today’s children pale in comparison to what we had.

Of course we had a bias towards 90’s kids shows because we were kids in 90’s and those shows were part of our childhood. So I’m sure the children of today will reminisce fondly about their TV shows when they get older. Since I’m only 20, I don’t have the experience of going through multiple generations, so I look back to you older folks out there (I know you exist on MC). How did you feel about TV shows made for children a generation younger than you? Did those of you growing up in the 60’s think that 60’s kid shows were better than those in the 70’s? I'd like to think of this as a little social analysis and see how everyone views their own childhood in comparison to others'.

    Re: Favorite Childhood TV Show?

Well, I grew up on the shows of the 70's & 80's. I was in my late teens when the 90's came around.

I think the shows from my generation were much better. They didn't dumb things down for kids back then. They knew we weren't stupid. Some of these shows were just plain weird, wrong, trippy and freaky on various levels (I'm looking at you, Sid and Marty Krofft). But they were always entertaining and I always catch myself watching if I come across a random obscure airing on cable.

I remember when Nickelodeon was a pay channel and the programming was a billion times better than the crap they air now (outside of SpongeBob). You Can't Do That on Television, Out of Control, Turkey TV... just to name a few.

I was/am also a fan of the Banana Splits, which actually was from the late 60's, but I caught it in reruns in the late 70's & early 80's. I remember watching the Skate Birds, but it was never good as the Splits.

These days it's all gross out and fart jokes, which get old pretty fast. I admit I do love me some SpongeBob and classic Ren & Stimpy though.

    Re: Favorite Childhood TV Show?

I think that television cared more about kids when I was growing up in the 60's. While TV's always been a means for someone to make money, I think kids are looked upon almost solely as targets for advertisers today.

And the fact that there are dozens more channels available today doesn't mean that there's more quality out there. When it comes to kids tv, there's less.

I used to love Captain Kangaroo, which was on CBS (believe it or not) every morning back in the day. In my later years I had the good fortune to meet and interview Bob Keeshan, a wonderful man.

I loved locally produced LA regional shows like Hobo Kelly and Sherriff John, even a little bit of "Engineer Bill" (drink your milk - red light, green light). Chucko the Clown was my very favorite! (All local shows, all way before your time, most of you).

I watched I Love Lucy and Leave It To Beaver (both already in reruns by then). Kukla, Fran and Ollie (a puppet show). Gumby! And even though I really didn't get the religious aspect, Davey and Goliath (which used the same early "claymation" technique.

Paul Winchell (ventriloquist) and Jerry Mahoney, Lost In Space, the original Batman TV show, I could go on...

They're too busy singing, to put anybody down.
And they're the young generation, and they've got something to say...

    PS...
No one else here watched Captain Kangaroo? Even in the more recent PBS days?

    Re: Favorite Childhood TV Show?

My younger brothers watched Sesame Street and the Electric Company a lot. Two interesting no-shows on the lists posted so far.
