Angry Why are Roommates Always Terrible?

I am on my forth batch of roommates in two years and I'm still not finding one that works for me. I have heard of some people who become roommates with eachother and become the best of friends. I on the other hand have had the worst of luck apparently.

I just had my roommates tell me tonight to grow up because of the grime in the bathtub that she just cleaned yesterday. She said she is already slidding around on it and it almost made her throw up in her mouth, no wait, it did. However, when I got in the shower this morning I was sliding around on the tub too. I guess she just sprayed the stuff on there and didn't wash it off. And I'm the terrible one?

The other week I confronted them about having alcohol in the apartment since it isn't allowed and we can all get into major trouble for it and they said they would take the blame for it. I still said I could get into trouble for it and one roommate said, if you brought this up to the other roommate that isn't here she would bring up the alarm clock thing. (I'm a heavy sleeper and don't always hear my first alarm, but a voice will wake me right up most times.) She said that alcohol is a "lifestyle choice" as apposed to an alarm clock? If you take away an alcohol being in a wellness apartment it doesn't change a lot compared to an alarm clock being removed which would make everyone late.

I'm seriously a loner when it comes to being home and that only makes matters worse. Please say I am not alone on any of this. And advice, stories, or help would be greatly appreciated!!

because its the way things work, in a couple of weeks, days, months, you will somehow find a way to work around them or work with them until them just look at the things that do work for you and keep thinking that in a few years they wont matter (trust me, thats the only way i get through school each day)

    good luck BPF

Been there, done that. Including the alcohol. I had a roommate for 9 months -- freshman dorm. After that, I scraped by enough to go solo. My roommate kept wine coolers in the dorm fridge. Not only was that illegal (both 18/19), but we were in a "drug-free" dorm, so if an RA found it we'd both lose on-campus housing. No one was placed in the "drug-free" rooms without consent -- she chose that status to take advantage of the larger rooms we were offered.

I think my favorite moment was when I returned from a weekend away and she greeted me by telling me that she'd had her boyfriend over the whole weekend and they both got drunk and he threw up all over the room -- but she was sure it didn't get on any of my stuff.

    No solutions -- just commiseration.

Just try not to let them get to you. I haven't been unlucky when it comes to roommates, so i don't know exactly how to deal with problems like this. Some people can just be real biotches, just stay happy and realize that you're only stuck with them until january.

I'm sorry you've had so many problems with roommates!! That would suck!

I, on the other hand, married my college roommate! So you could say we got along juuuust fine! We're also best friends still with the other two people we lived with! And it's been 12 years! I miss them so much...thankfully one just moved back to the area from Hawaii, so we see her often again. We all had the best time together. I can't imagine NOT loving my roommates. Ugh.

I did have several weird roommates.....one who smelled horrible and one who had a porn addiction. See? Things could be worse!!

people are stupid... try to make freinds with them but if you cant then keep to yourself unless you need to talk to them about something they are doing, and you can always use us to talk to.

Re: Why are Roommates Always Terrible?

I'm lucky enough to have moved in with my best friend... sure, things can be a bit rocky with him at times, but don't know if there's many others out there that I can stand.

We've went through several third/fourth parties moving in, but it's always turned up really bad. I really don't think a roommate situation can last long unless the person is a best friend...

Hope you can find a good one soon... and good luck with your current ones.

Thanks! I am trying. And as you said MM88, I have been trying but when someone tells me to grow up over something like that and then burns my nightlight with her hair straightener without realizing where she set it down on? (Hello, she did take it out of the plug to put her straightener in!) At least she smelled it burning compared to when she usually just leaves the place with it turned on.

Re: Why are Roommates Always Terrible?

Ugh, I feel your pain! My freshman year of college was a nightmare because of my roommates. I asked for a double... and got put in a quad! My roommates were all big partiers, and I like to stick to myself. They would always come come drunk and sick, then berate me later for not taking care of them. They'd "pregame" before a party, and then leave all their empties lying around the room. And somehow I was the one that got ratted out to the RA when they decided that they didn't like me much! I still count that year as easily the worst of my life, and you couldn't pay me to ever live in a dorm again.

On the other hand, it was that awful year that made me decide to take time off for the College Program, which turned out to be the best year of my life! I got lucky on that one, and found a roommate beforehand that I got along with perfectly. I couldn't have asked for a more friendly, understanding, caring roomie.

Still, when I moved back here to SoCal afterwards, I flat out told my parents that I refused to live in a dorm anymore. In fact, I didn't want roommates at all - that freshman year experience was so bad, that I couldn't stand the thought of sharing an apartment with anyone again. Luckily for me, my parents gave in on that one!

What happened to you is what I am afraid will happen to me and what happened to a girl at my work location before I got there. I think I might just have to find a place and move there.

Re: Why are Roommates Always Terrible?

My first roommate was underage for drinking (I was legal) and insisted on having parties with alcohol. The final straw was when I came home from a party to find her friends doing the horizonal mambo on our couch.

My final roommate was psychotic and a pathalogical liar. She called the police on me to complain that I asked her to turn down her music (at 2am) and told them I wasn't on the lease and they needed to remove me. I produced a copy of the lease (with my name on it) and they fined her for disturbing the peace (yes, her music was that loud).

After that I decided that ramen and water on my own was the way to go.

I hope things get better for you or you can figure out a way to get by without them.

Re: Why are Roommates Always Terrible?

My two roommates in my dorm were GREAT so I can't complain. If you have trouble waking up to an alarm clock, then get a clock radio, and try to tune it to a station which has a talk radio show in the morning, or an AM station with voices. Although they're still coming out of a radio, maybe the "voice" aspect will help.

And for grime in the bathtub, all you can do is use Comet and a little elbow grease.

PS there's got to be someone to report the alcohol to.

Re: Why are Roommates Always Terrible?

When I first went to SC, I was in a quad, which sucks, especially when you're a bad roommate like me (hey, at least I admit it). What ends up happening is you get a 3-on-1 situation where they're always going to gang up on someone.

So, when I returned to SC and once again had to face the prospect of having a roomie, I opted for a studio, which, along with being the cheapest option, also meant only one roommate (vs. a 1-br which was the most expensive). I can deal with one woman better than three.

The best solution, of course, is to only room with guys. But that's not always possible when going through "official" channels such as a school or program, so whenever possible, just try to have as few roomies as possible.

    We women suck.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Ah, roomates. How i do NOT miss having them. They seem to progressively got worse which each one I had. One was such a witch, that we ended up having this silent tp argument. She felt it had to go under, I insisted over. So everyday the tp roll was 'silently' switched back and forth.

I too, was hoping for a life long friend with one of my roomates. Actually, the one rm i had during the summer ended up being my closest friend to this day. But I think if we lived together for the enitire year, we wouldn't have.

BPF - just remember. School will be over soon, and by then, you can choose not to have one. And then enjoy strutting around in your underwear eating ice cream

Marge: [reading from the test box] "Ahoy, Maties! If the water turns blue, a baby for you! If purple ye see, no baby thar be!"
Homer: So, which is it? Blue or purple?
    Marge: Pink.
    Homer: D'oh!
