    so many earthquakes= doom?

If you haven't already heard a 6.9 earthquake stuck China yesturday. So far killing hundreds of people and thousands injured. My thoughts and prayers go to the families of the victims and people of the nation. This had been follwed from the baja, chile, and haiti earthquakes.

However I was reading the comments below about the story and I swear, over 3/4 of all comments were talking about 2012, or the last days, or the apocolypse. It made me think. Obviously, there is a scientific explination, the plates are shifting and causes the surrondings ones to shift also. However looking at it in a supernatural sense, I will admit, gave me (for a lighter word) the willys.

Im just curious to see your opinions on the matter.

You know it is a little scary to think of all these little Natural Disasters that have been happening lately.

The earth is a very geologically active planet. There are dozens of earthquake every day. On April 7th alone there were at least 16 of 3.9 or greater. If you look at the USGS website, it shows all of the activity there actually is all over the planet.

Earthquake Hazards Program: Recent Earthquakes - Last 8-30 Days

Have we had a large number of big earthquakes recently? Yes, but from a statistical standpoint, it doesn't necessarily mean anything significant. Swarms happen all the time as the tectonic plates move around and pressure one place is released causes more pressure somewhere else until everything, everywhere gets back into a sort of equilibrium again.

    Re: so many earthquakes= doom?

Recently everyday I joke and say, "so, where was the earthquake today?" There do seem to be a lot of problems going on recently, though. I think that there's probably something going on, something unusual. Some anomaly. We'll probably find out soon. I don't think there's any sort of apocalypse on its way, nor do I think one will occur in 2012.

I pride myself that in May 2008 I did a report on Mayan Religion in school, and part of my research included the end of the Mayan calendar. So it was brought to my attention a lot sooner than many other people I know.

I'm in the camp that thinks nothing big is going to happen. It's the ending of one cycle and the start of another. Same as what happens at 11:59:59 PM on December 31st, every year. Nothing happens. If anything does happen, I'm sure it will be for the better.

I think all of the recent quakes are definitely a sign...of nothing. The earth has always been and always will be quite active geologically speaking, with some periods of heightened activity as well as dormant periods. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

And if it is? And if the world is coming to an end in 2012? I guess we won't have to worry about it after that, will we?

    Re: so many earthquakes= doom?

This is also excerpted from the USGS site.

There's a 100 percent chance of an earthquake today. Though millions of persons may never experience an earthquake, they are very common occurrences on this planet. So today -- somewhere -- an earthquake will occur.

It may be so light that only sensitive instruments will perceive its motion; it may shake houses, rattle windows, and displace small objects; or it may be sufficiently strong to cause property damage, death, and injury.

It is estimated that about 700 shocks each year have this capability when centered in a populated area. But fortunately, most of these potentially destructive earthquakes center in unpopulated areas far from civilization.

Since a major portion of the world's earthquakes each year center around the rim of the Pacific Ocean (Ring of Fire), referred to by seismologists as the circum-Pacific belt, this is the most probable location for today's earthquake. But it could hit any location, because no region is entirely free of earthquakes.

Stating that an earthquake is going to occur today is not really "predicting earthquakes". To date, they cannot be predicted. But anyone, on any day, could make this statement and it would be true. This is because several million earthquakes occur annually; thereby, thousands occur each day, although most are too small to be located. The problem, however, is in pinpointing the area where a strong shock will center and when it will occur.

The so-called supernatural element means nothing to me, but the fact that there have been so many significant earhquakes as of late does concern me a bit.

According to my friend at CalTech, we are actually within the normal range of the number of 6+ magnitude earthquakes this year. It seems like we're having a lot more than usual, but we actually are not.

The world is coming to an end in 2012, and the Chinese are building massive arks to ferry the human population, but you have to be rich or be a writer with a divorced wife and two kids who go to Yellowstone and meet a raving lunatic who happens to have maps to China and meet a fat Russian, his girlfriend, and a pilot who can fly a Tu-182 sitting on the tarmac and it has to have a Bentley with voice control. Then they have to meet a kind Tibetan monk who can sneak them inside the facility.
