    Thanksgiving Menu

So Thanksgiving is just over a week away so let's talk turkey (couldn't resist)
What's on your menu? Is it tried and true? Do you make the same things annually? Do you follow family recipes? I'm looking for a veggie to make this year, I would actually like to do two. One a little more adventerous and one more on the "norm". So hit me with some ideas

    Re: Thanksgiving Menu

I'm not generally involved in the food prep so I can't say what the menu will be. It's usually traditional, but sometimes they decide to get lazy/creative (depends how you view it). All i know for sure is that my grandmother's mashed potatoes are usually the star of the show for me. I think my sister and I would sit there and eat nothing but if we didn't feel obligated to share. I was thinking about offering to help out by making a desert that I saw the other day, but I'm not sure yet.

    Re: Thanksgiving Menu

Usually I follow a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, but since being married I have had to conform some of my traditions to meet the tastes of my in laws, the one thing that I will not change however is that I will introduce new veggie dishes, I like fresh vegetables and if they can't live with out canned green beans one day a year, they know where the cabinet is.
This year I think I will use this recipe, it looks easy and sounds good.

    Brussels sprouts with chestnuts:
    ingredients
    2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    3/4 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    1 1/4 cups water
2 lb Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved lengthwise (8 cups)
1 cup heavy cream (I will probably use light cream)
2/3 cup bottled roasted whole chestnuts (4 oz), coarsely crumbled

    prep:
Bring butter, salt, pepper, and 1 cup water to a boil over high heat in a deep 12-inch heavy skillet, then add Brussels sprouts and simmer, partially covered, stirring occasionally, until crisp-tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove lid and boil over moderately high heat until water is evaporated and sprouts are lightly browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Add cream and remaining 1/4 cup water and bring to a boil, stirring. Add chestnuts, then reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until heated through, about 2 minutes.

Oh, a very simple side dish that is unbelievably simple is fresh frozen corn off the cob with chives.

The Wolf family decided to do a Disney Thanksgiving dinner. Reservations at the Grand Ballroom that evening. Woohoo! No cooking, first time in years!
Mom, remember, it's not what a person is like on the outside that counts,
it's what they are like in their HEART!

I would've loved to do that! It sounds wonderful. But, I just couldn't do it, this being my first ever Thanksgiving in my house So that's on the horizon for next year

I'm having dinner at my place again. I'm trying to decide if I want to cook again, or just get the cooked meals from like Vons? Any ideas? It's only going to be for 3 people....
Marge: Barnacle Bill's Home Pregnancy Test? Homer, shouldn't we have gone with a better-known brand?
Homer: But Marge, this one came with a corn-cob pipe!
Marge: [reading from the test box] "Ahoy, Maties! If the water turns blue, a baby for you! If purple ye see, no baby thar be!"
Homer: So, which is it? Blue or purple?
    Marge: Pink.
    Homer: D'oh!
Marge: "If ye test should fail, to a doctor set sail!"

I'm still undecided if I'll even cook or not...my Mom MAY OR MAY NOT COME...so if she does...we'll cook together...if she doesn't...I'm thinking of not cooking...maybe going out to a nice buffet.

Of course I have no idea if there is a nice buffet here in town...hmmm!

    Maybe I'm cooking afterall...

    If so...it'll be
    Turkey and Ham
    Dressing
    Sweet Potatos with marshmallows
    Mashed Potatoes with cheddar cheese
    Peas
    Corn
    Fruit Salad
Cranberry Sauce (From a can! and homemade!)
    Homemade rolls or bread
    Pumpkin Pie
    Cherry Pie
    Chocolate Pie

    Re: Thanksgiving Menu

We have a big dinner with a lot of people at my husband's grandparent's house. She always cooks everything- down to the last FOUR homemade pies- and last year was so frazzled. So this year my husband and I are making everyone bring two dishes to ease the burden on her. I am making cheesy brussel sprouts (my brother's favorite) and the mashed potatoes.

There will also be turkey, dressing, a couple salads, roasted oysters (a family tradition), cheesy potato casserole, jello salads (yuck!), sweet potato casserole, at least three homemade pies, and I have no idea what else! But in that family- you never know who is going to drop by, so there is always a ton!
