    Bad Gifts Already??!!!!

I thought this would be avoidable but apparently my cousin has decided to ask me directly in an email what I think of the gift she got me. I need everyone's advice.

She got me a pretty necklace in the shape of a snowflake with a blue topaz in the middle. While I'm sure this would make a great gift for someone else, its just not my taste. For one, I don't really care for jewlery and two if I did buy some jewelry it would be silver.

So, since she asked me directly and I have to answer her what do you think I should do. I do appreciate the gift but it isn't something that interest me at all.

You sortof answered your own question. Tell her that you thought it was very pretty.... that's truthful enough. But then over the next year or so, drop really big hints on what you'd rather have.

You already got my response to this question this afternoon

I'd be honest with her but the good thing is.... she doesn't live close enough to know if you wear it or not

well you can always give it to your daughter, and why hurt her feelings by saying you did not like it ? I say be quiet, and be kind

Brilliant! Exactly what I was going to say.

You think it's pretty and she'll love to hear that! The one time I was truthful about a present it totally backfired on me and I regret saying it to this day.
I was about 14 and my grandmother had picked out a pair of earrings that were way too petite for my big lobes. I told her they kind of got lost on my ears...big mistake. She was so excited for me to try them on and love them. After I opened my big mouth I could tell how hurt she was. Granted, I was a prickly teenager and I'm sure you'd tell your cousin in much more PC way, in my opinion it would be best to be gracious and lie!

    Re: Bad Gifts Already??!!!!

you said it perfctly in your post
pretty necklace in the shape of a snowflake with a blue topaz
reply to her e-mail with, a simple

'thank you so much for the pretty blue topaz snowflake necklace, that was so sweet of you to think of me.
    thank you'
no hurt feelings and no lying on your part... everyone is happy...

and I know it's a bit of a cliche but it's the thought that counts.

Okay, I think I will tell her they are pretty and thank you for buying them for me.

Thanks for the posts. LOL I imagine after the holidays we should make a worst gift received thread so people can post about them. *laughs*
