    Half a million feet!

My friends know that I am a dedicated bicyclist. Good weather, good health, and good fortune have combined to give me the best year ever on a bicycle. I finished this year with 9203 miles. Much of it was uphill, and my total "elevation gain" for the year is 500,755 feet. That's just over a half million feet of climbing. I'm not the fastest climber I know, but I'm persistent and seldom intimidated by an uphill grade.

Of course, it helps that I'm retired, but when I was working, I was able to ride over 8000 miles a year. (About 35 miles a week was commuting by bike.) Nowadays, I average about 12 hours/week on a bike, as long as the weather's dry, I'm feeling good, and I have other cyclists to ride with.

Here I am on the Fall River Century, one of three 100 mile rides I completed this year:

It's been one heck of a year. I'm hoping I'll be able to do as well in 2012.
Have bicycle, will ride. Finished 2012 with 10,089 miles, 683 hours, and 482,000 feet of elevation gain.
    2013: 201 rides, 8171 miles, 544 hours, 480K feet.
    2014 so far: 5751 miles, 319,000 feet

Yay! Congrats! I'm so glad you're better after you got hurt.

Dude can you motivate me? I keep trying to convince myself to walk or bike to work, but I work nights and I still have the So Cal mentality about female being alone at night.

You're close enough to WALK to work? It would be a sin to drive. Riding a bike should take you no time at all. The biggest obstacle is where to store your bike at work. I had room right behind my desk.

It used to take me about 20 minutes to bike to work, and with traffic, driving took 15. On a bike, I'd arrive at work all energized (but not yet sweaty) from the exercise.

If your route to work is well lit, you only need simple lights to be seen. Add a windbreaker in bright colors or with reflective tape, and you're good to go

I live 1.1 miles away from work. But I work at night. We have a bike rack outside the ER. It takes me 2 minutes to drive to work. I think I may walk tomorrow. I don't have class so I could do it.

It would probably take you about 4-5 minutes to ride to work, given an average speed of 12-15 mph. How secure is the bike rack? I never park my bike where it would need to be locked. (But then, my bikes cost thousands of dollars.)

    Re: Half a million feet!

In 1972, my friend John and I rode our bikes from Norwalk to Vancouver Canada.

We still talk about our trip every time we get together. 1600 miles is a great way to get to know each other.

This has been a Filmways presentation dahling.
