Great country...beautiful scenery. Wellington is the best city that ever existed, and the south island is one of the most beautiful places that ever existed. Bungy jumps are really fun, and the people are some of the friendliest you'll ever meet. For such a small country the local music is great. I love bands such as Elemeno P, Steriogram, and Shihad, all of whom are from New Zealand.

Paul Holmes is also from New Zealand...what a guy

I spent 4 weeks there in the late '70s traveling the North and South Islands by car. It has some of the most unspoiled, spectacular scenery you can imagine.

Ward - Get the ******* hint, I'm not finishing it.

desertdweller- I agree. It's too bad you only had 4 weeks. I walked away after a year and still felt as though I barely saw anything.

Re: Tell us about New Zealand

I used to date a Kiwi long-distance for a couple years, and learned some neat things about his country, and even got to sample some treats that were sent:

    • Chicken Chips (chicken-flavored potato chips) - these are just like stardard Lay's chips, dusted with yellow chicken "soup" powder. A bit odd at first, but surprisingly tasty.
    • Jaffas (chocolate balls with an orange-flavored candy coating) - these were my favorite. They're seriously yummy.
    • Chocolate Fish (chocolate-covered strawberry marshmallow "fish") - tastes like a chocolate-covered Peep. Sweet and strange.
    • Pineapple Lumps (chocolate-covered pineapple marshmallow chunks) - just like the Chocolate Fish, but small squares and pineapple flavored instead. These were quite gross.

There were four of us and we planned the trip for over a year to make the most of our time there. We spent more time on the South Island because of the natural beauty and felt the North was too similar to California.

From Wellington we went down the east coast to Dunedin and over to Milford Sound and up the west coast into the alpine regions and spent time in Queensland. Back to the North Island we did the highlights there. It was April and the autumn was in full swing which made it even lovelier.

The flight on Air NZ was expensive for that time and we were permitted two additional stops so we took advantage of that and stayed 3 days in Fiji and 5 days in Tahiti. With layover stops we also got quick peeks at Rarotonga and Tonga.
