    Innappropriate For Disney?

Recently I watched Pinocchio. All seemed well until the Pleasure Island part. Several characters used the word "jackass," and there was drinking and smoking by children. Does anyone else finf this odd?

Pinocchio is one of my favorite movies, and it teaches the viewer many valuable life lessons. For sure those scenes with the donkeys can be quite scary to some, young and old alike. When little boys misbehave, they are indeed acting exactly like donkeys and must suffer the consequences. In this case, they actually become donkeys.

The movie is both loved, and hated because of this example.

Seeing as Walt Disney himself was involved, I would take it that makes it completely appropriate. Despite the image, that even some Disney fans like to hold, Walt Disney was not aiming to creating a perfectly sanitized world aimed at little kids. The whole point of the Pleasure Island scene is a morality tale, behave like a jackass and you'll become a jackass.

Sad thing is, nowadays people focus on the drinking, smoking and questionable language. Not the message that kids who partake in these things while skipping school are ruining their future.

I don't find it odd at all. Children who drink and smoke ARE jackasses.

I was pretty much a jackass when I was a kid. Maybe that's where I got it from. Hmmm.

I remember seeing a documentary a few years ago on animated films. I wish I could remember the title and look for it on YouTube, but sorry to say I don't. The documentary said that when animation was first used, it was aimed at entertaining everyone, not just children. It was an innovative way at movie making that was appreciated by people of all ages. Based on this, I assume that Walt Disney did not specifically make children the target audience of his films.

I agree, that scene was a morality tale.

According to Michael Barrier, he at least once expressed the opinion that children under the age of about seven should not even be in a movie theater.

What he said. It's what a mule was called, and still is. It's like using bitch to refer to a female dog.

Oh and Kingofthejungle, you should probably stay away from viewing Song of the South.

The scene in Pinocchio certainly does not condone smoking and drinking. And the whole story shows that even bad boys can change their ways and earn rewards for being good.

    Re: Innappropriate For Disney?

A radio drama from the 40s, My Favorite Husband, had an episode where they said "jackasses". This, a good 10 years before Lucille Ball could say the word "pregnant". I'm guessing "jackass" was never considered a bad enough word to censor.
Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?
