Re: Sick Kitty: Prayers and Thoughts Needed

I've used Pill Pockets to medicate other animals, but for my own, we both hold the cat while one squeezed the sides of his mouth to make it open, shove the pill in a far as we can, close the mouth and rub the throat until he swallows. Still not fun, but it works.

Try putting the pill in either butter, bologna or wet food. Messy, but effective.

Liquid meds are a bit easier. We put the cat on his back, put a drop on his lips to make him lick it off, then, while his mouth is open, we shoot the rest in the mouth. Sometimes it even all makes it in too.

Pull his ears back, then gently press on the lower part of the jaw....oh heck...give me a call!

Re: Sick Kitty: Prayers and Thoughts Needed

Well, he's down to one pill a day now. We got the call with the final test results today, and he's terminally ill with FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), which causes chronic build-up of fluid in the lungs and abdomen. There is no cure, and they can only keep treating the symptoms. But, treatment depends on the frequency of the recurring fluid build-up, and other problems it can cause. So, he could be with us only a matter of days, or for many months. The pill he's on now is to help slow down the accumulation of the fluid, so it's helping extend his life. We'll treat what symptoms we can to extend him as long as possible, and most importantly, as long as he's comfortable and happy. So, we can just take it a day at a time. The vet can't give us a timeframe, as the disease affects each cat differently.

aww DP im sorry to hear the diagnosis..ive been keeping an eye on this thread and i was so hoping it wasnt anything major..

sending big and lots of your way!

do the vets know of how he could have contracted the FIP or is it like my doggie girl morgan and her EPI, falls under one of those things catagory with morgan and her EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency) she may have had it her whole life just waiting to come out or she was pre-despostioned due to something in her gene-pool

she is on pacreatic enzyme replacement therapy and you wouldnt know she was sick till you saw me fixing her food and putting her enzyme replacement powder on it

are you still having trouble getting him to take his pill?

Oh crud Teresa, I'm so sorry....
I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it.
That explains the trouble that I'm always in...

DP, my heart goes out to you right now. My Cooper had Valley Fever for 9 months but I wouldn't have traded the time for anything.

Talk to your vet about compounded meds; that is a liquid form that is suplimented with flavoring. My vet didn't compound but one of the family owned pharmacys here did. It was more expensive but worth it because it was so much less stressful for every one.
