    Surf City, Here We Come...

I know that we have many MC friends in both of these areas of California, so all I can say is...Two girls for every boy!!!

Huntington Beach, Calif., given rights to title 'Surf City USA'

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — "Surf City USA" is officially in Southern California, according to a federal agency that granted this town exclusive trademark rights despite challenges from northern rival Santa Cruz.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded Huntington Beach three official registration numbers that permit it to use the designation "Surf City USA" in ads, on beach bags, hats and other beachwear, the city Conference and Visitor's Bureau announced Friday.
A message left at the Santa Cruz mayor's office Saturday night was not returned.
For years, both towns have called themselves Surf City after the 1963 hit song by Jan and Dean that boasts of a place where there are "two girls for every boy."
In 2004, Huntington Beach applied for official recognition of the name. Santa Cruz cried foul, and a battle began, with the cities trading legal challenges, taunts and talk of a surfing contest for the title.
Santa Cruz applied for its own trademark: "Original Surf City, USA." Then-mayor Mike Rotkin even strummed his guitar on a local cable access channel and musically challenged Huntington Beach to a surf-off.
Dean Torrence, who co-wrote the song, lives in Huntington Beach and has said he backs his hometown's claim.
Huntington Beach holds world-class surfing competitions and houses the International Surfing Museum.

A side note...the Beach Boys Brian Wilson was the lead writer for Jan and Dean's famous hit, and his band manager/father was incensed that he'd...give away a Number 1 song...

Any thoughts? Can we all be friends?

As long as it's not Ocean Beach, I'm good with whatever. My sister lived in CA for a while and had me visit her there, what a DUMP!!! Eesh!!

Sorry, off topic. I am looking into doing a surf camp later this summer, I really want to learn to surf, so that should be a good time.

Ocean Beach is in San Diego. It's quite a "funky" area of town... not unlike Los Angeles' Venice Beach.

The museum there is great, very cozy and filled with the coolest stuff. Dean Torrance has always been a big supporter of theirs and spends a fair amount of time there as well.

Ocean Beach is also in San Francisco, but due to the riptide you can't surf there.

Way to go, HB! It's my hometown...my family has lived there since the 1920s. (But, somehow I ended up in Chicago.) But I'm heading home in ten days. Yay.

For DLR vacationers, HB is just a short drive away and a great mid-trip getaway in case you need a break from the lines at the parks. Miles and miles of beaches and a neat wetlands preserve (Bolsa Chica) and still a bit of the old-school beach feel despite all the recent redevelopment.
