Question Ouch my back! (aka: I need a new bed.)

My back is killing me today. We flipped the mattress last night, only to realize it really is time to buy a new bed.

Any thoughts on a good place to go or a brand that you love/hate? Recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I have no recommendations but I'm with you, we badly need a new bed, too. I'm hoping to make it until we both get to our goal weight, so the poor bed isn't working so hard

We've had good luck with these guys:
    http://www.verlo.com/

Great quality and reasonable prices. Unfortunately, they're not all over the country yet, so depending on where you live, there might or might not be a store near you. Otherwise, best o' luck to you with your back!

If I had the dinero, I would be getting a tempurpedic or other kind of memory foam bed. I've tried them out at mattress stores and they're FABULOUS!

    But they're pretty pricey.

Yeah they are! We are going to get the best bed we can for the money. We won't be spending as much on something like a Temperpedic, but not far off.

I am going to try Robinson's May. Ours hasn't started closing out yet, but the last time I looked they had a great sale on mattresses.

How funny you post this, because last night I had a dream about you! You were trying to get me to get a job where you work.

Anywaty... I don't know any places around here but I would suggest some type of mattress discounter.
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

We just bought a Sleep Number bed a couple of months ago. It was the best money we ever spent! I have never slept better.

Before buying it, we tried all types of mattresses - including memory foam. Nothing can compare.

They are pricey (our king ran $2600), but they come with a 20 year guarantee on all parts, and a 30 day full refund if not satisfied.

I think you should buy a firm mattress. Good beds do not come cheap, but as you speand 1/3 of your life on one it's not a bad idea to invest in one. We have a firm Sterns and Foster king bed that totally rocks. Love it. The best $1K I've ever spent. We had a sucky Sealy from Costco that was too too soft. It hurt our backs really bad. I say go firm.

I feel your pain (literally!) We are having the same problem. We bought one of the Sleep Number beds - do not recommend. I would love to have the Tempurpedic... but so expensive!

The bed in our office/guest room is a Sealy from Costco. It is our old bed before the one we currently have.

I wouldn't mind a sleep number bed, but I am concerned about the air part. I have only ever slept on a regular mattress.

The memory foam beds don't do it for us. And from what I hear, it takes time to get used to it.

    Is your current mattress soft?

How long have you had the bed?

Is it holding up well under normal wear & tear?

Does it feel different than a regular mattress?

Does it take a while to get used to it?

Do you ever have a problem with the pumps?

Does it feel like you are sleeping on an air mattress?

    About 7 years
Is it holding up well under normal wear & tear?
About the same as normal mattresses. We are getting the normal "divot" in the cushion top like a usual mattress.
Does it feel different than a regular mattress?
    (See answer below)
Does it take a while to get used to it?
    Not really
Do you ever have a problem with the pumps?
    We haven't
Does it feel like you are sleeping on an air mattress?
This is my biggest beef. To us, it feels like an air mattress with cushioning on top. If you pump it up firm, it is pretty much like any other firm style mattress - no real give. If you like it a bit softer, then you don't get any support and it feels like your heaviest area is sinking and you are laying in a hammock. It did not start out that way, but has gotten worse over the years.

Just my 2˘, for what it is worth. I know others who love it. We will not buy one again.
