    I hate Disney geeks...

...who think they know everything there is to know about Disney, but clearly, they don't.

I'm working in a Disney memorabilia store for my work experience currently, and one of my boss's suppliers came in today for a chat. The good thing about working in a Disney store is that you are surrounded by fellow geeks, so the fun never ends

Anyway. I was in a conversation with my boss and this supplier about new things happening at Disney parks all over the world. He had a magazine (the supplier, not my boss) and it had pictures of Expedition Everest at DAK and Monsters Inc at DCA. I said something like "Aah, yeah, both are supposed to be really good." Well my boss knows I'm a huge geek, just like him, so he ignored my comment, but the supplier looked at me as if to say "How dare a 15 year old know this?" I just ignored it.

Anyway, he was saying that Disneyland Park at DLRP is getting a new land next year. Apparently a new land attached to 'the land where Buzz Lightyear is'. I said "No, I haven't heard anything about that. Maybe you mean the Toon Studios at the Walt Disney Studios, next door." Any true Disney geek would know that the Toon Studios are in fact opening next year, and there is nothing what so ever on a land opening in Disneyland Park, so he must be wrong.

"No no no, definitely not. It is definitely in Disneyland Park."

I just ignore it, and nod politely. I go back into the office, carry on with some work (namely looking through Disney magazines), stewing over this foolish old man's pretentious nature. And then I think - "No. I am going to prove this silly old man wrong."

I go in. "So, you know this new land? What's it called?"
"Erm... I don't really know. Cartoon Mania, Cartoon Studios something like that?"
"Oh. Cool. Well, all I've heard about is the Toon Studios land opening in the other park next year. There must be another land as well."
"Erm, yeah. Must be. Or I could be mistaken."

    Man shuts up.
I love proving wannabe Disney geeks wrong.

Most random topic ever...lol. Okay. You know though, just as bad a Disney Geek who gets things wrong are the Disney Geeks who get off when others (especially Disney Geeks) get things wrong.

Oh, I just looked up the word geek, and I now know why I don't like that term. Geek is defined as a socially inept person.

Now I know what you meant, when you said that you do not like people who think that they know all about Disney.

I, too, have heard people speak incorrectly about Disney and it's theme parks. A bowling team mate of mine, recently went to Disney World, with her son, and his family. They visited Epcot, and Animal Kingdom, and did not visit either MGM, or the Magic Kingdom. She replied, that they didn't get to go to Disney World. I believe that she was referring to the Magic Kingdom. I believe that in the context of the word "geek", she was very unknowledgeable in her understanding of the correct terminology for the place that she had vacationed at.

I remember chuckling. I did not correct her, and I just tell people that I love visiting the Disney Parks, and I am a fan of all the wonderful things that Walt Disney began.

Yeah but thats a cute mistake. Its just something that any average person would do. What annoyed me was that this guy was so pompous and he was so sure of himself. It just made me more determined to prove him wrong.

If I encountered someone like you did, I would do the same as you. It doesn't make me want to prove them wrong or anything, because they weren't doing it in an annoying way. It was just a simple mistake.

Oh and I didn't mean to cause offence to anyone with the term geek. I will be the first to admit I am a Disney geek, through and through. I hate Disney geeks who don't deserve to be Disney geeks!

I stopped correcting people like that. Every time I do, I seem to end up getting into some worthless argument about the pros and cons of something completely unrelated.

Never argue with an idiot, they just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I agree, it's just not worth correcting people, they'll refuse to admit being wrong. It's fun to hear "let's go over to the Jurassic Park ride" as they head towards Splash Mountain. Why be the jerk that ruins their fun time at the park?

I think people are getting the wrong idea about what I did... I proved him wrong because he annoyed me, he patronised me and he was very snobbish about the way he put his information across. He looked down at me, and I don't like snobs. So I gave him a taste of his own medicine.

I agree with what Barbarann, Pacha and Anders have said... I don't bother with things like that. I just smile. I do bother with nasty people.

    Words to live by...

Yeah, I'd be the first one to admit that I don't know everything about Disney, actually hardly anything at all, but it never ceases to amaze me while waiting in a line, I hear folks tell others such blatantly incorrect information about the Parks.

I don't correct them, I just chuckle to myself, or at most share the info with my wife, so she can laugh as well.

I suppose if I heard someone tell another person something that was unsafe or downright illegal to do (???), I might offer a suggestion or two, but other than that, they're on their own.

Yeah, I can see your point. Sounds like he was nasty to you because you're younger than him. I bet if you were closer to his age, he would have listened and shown more respect. A very common mistake "adults" sometimes make!

    dear god i understand completely.

i went to DL on senior trip, and there was *one* girl who i literally wanted to strangle. she was the type that always has to one-up everyone, y'know? and im a *total* disney geek (theme parks only, though), so i was beaming the entire time we were in the park, SO giddy. with my little group, showing liz "there used to be a skyway! hear that music? thats from the carousel of progress which i think used to be there!" etc etc. mainly excited cause i'm an east coast girl and i'd always dreamed of goin to DL.

    ANYWAY!

so this other girl ends up goin around with us at the end of the day, and i tried to casually talk about things. i honestly dont remember what i said. just talking about random things, i guess. things that i found exciting that i knew no one else did (but couldnt shut up about). and after id say anything, she'd say "yeah. i know. i already knew that." in a "duh?" kind of tone.

totally defensive. and its not like i was saying obvious things. like, if id said "thats fantasmic. thats in mgm too." i wouldve deserved that response. but when i'm excitedly talking about the changes they're about to make to the haunted mansion (pre-purple sheets *gasp*!), "duh" isnt an appropriate attitude, y'know?

anyway. bus ride back was the worst. i was talking to amy (sweet girl in my class) about tower of terror (i was sick the day we went to DCA and didnt ride), and how it was different than mgm's. and this girl, who was sitting on the other end of the bus, loudly spoke up after amy had told me all t he ways it was different, and said, "yeah. its different. didnt you know that rachel? yeah." and started to tell me everything amy already had.

    sorry. long story.
but yes. i hate people who feel the need to out-do everyone they meet.
