HOUSTON - Former Enron Corp. chiefs Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were convicted Thursday of conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud in a case born from one of the biggest business scandals in U.S. history. The verdict put the blame for the demise of what was once the nation's seventh-largest company squarely on its top two executives. It came in the sixth day of deliberations following a trial that lasted nearly four months.
Lay was also convicted of bank fraud and making false statements to banks in a separate trial related to his personal banking.
The former corporate titans are now convicted felons facing years in prison when the panel found them guilty of running an elaborate fraud that gave the nation's onetime seventh-largest company a glamorous illusion of success.
Jurors declared through their verdict that both men repeatedly lied to cover a vast web of unsustainable accounting tricks and failing ventures that shoved Enron into bankruptcy protection in December 2001.

Ok, now that I'm slightly off of my high, it's still not a good day. The many employees who lost their jobs and retirement savings, the dissolution of one of the "big five" accounting firms, Arthur Anderson and the many jobs lost there--- no one truly wins, but perhaps these convictions will serve as slight justice for all those done wrong.

Eh, I'm underwhelmed by the convitions. That was really a no-brainer. Did anyone actually think there was a chance they WOULDN'T be found guilty????
Now sentencing... that's where I start getting interested!!!!

Now watch them get really pathetic sentences.
Rien est parfait.
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Guilty Verdicts In The Enron Trial
Since none of us were in the courtroom with the jury the entire time, I honestly believed anything was possible. Common sense clearly points to guilt, but it wouldn't have been the first time jurrors have been swayed by their emotions or fixated on one piece of evidence rather than the entire case. It has happened before, and it really isn't that I don't have faith in our judicial system, but that it was all the more important this time.
Yes yes-- I'm also very much looking forward to the sentencing.
