Is Disneyland ready for the next big quake?

Southern San Andreas fault waiting to explode

Expert believes Los Angeles area at risk for massive earthquake

    Reported by Reuters
    Full story at http://msnbc.msn.com/id/13457472/

LONDON - The southern end of the San Andreas fault near Los Angeles, which has been still for more than two centuries, is under immense stress and could produce a massive earthquake at any moment, a scientist said Wednesday.

Yuri Fialko, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at La Jolla, Calif., said that given average annual movement rates in other areas of the fault, there could be enough pent-up energy in the southern end to trigger a cataclysmic jolt of up to 32 feet (10 meters).

"The observed strain rates confirm that the southern section of the San Andreas fault may be approaching the end of the interseismic phase of the earthquake cycle," he wrote in the journal Nature.

A sudden lateral movement of 23 to 32 feet (7 to 10 meters) would be among the largest ever recorded.
    Growing older is manditory
    Growing up is however, optional

DLR is at least 120+ miles from the area where experts say the SA Fault hasnt ruptured in decades (around the Salton Sea). Yes there'd be lots of shaking and there'd probably be some cracks and such, but I doubt there'd be any serious structural damage.

Look at when the Northridge quake happened. There was damage to Anaheim Stadium, and thats only 50 miles away from the epicenter for a 6.8 and I dont remember there being any issues at the park.

Yeah Yeah Yeah...I've been hearing about the "Big One" about as long as Christians have been told about the "Second Coming" I have yet to see either.

Re: Is Disneyland ready for the next big quake?

This is news? The Big One has always been an imminent threat.

That's the beauty to earthquakes... you simply don't know when they're coming. You just assume they're going to happen tomorrow and get on with it.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

I'm sure Disneyland will be just fine, I'm sure after the qauke they will close it and inspect it, maybe find a veiw cracks in pathways but other than that it should be just fine. Now Universal is another story exspecially with their huge starway escelators, those seem like they would go down very easily.
