Angry We are raising a generation of wusses!!!

    I'm speechless.

Tag! More schools ban games at recess
    By Emily Bazar
    USA TODAY

Some traditional childhood games are disappearing from school playgrounds because educators say they're dangerous.
Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., banned tag at recess this year. Others, including a suburban Charleston, S.C., school, dumped contact sports such as soccer and touch football.
In other cities, including Wichita; San Jose, Calif.; Beaverton, Ore.; and Rancho Santa Fe., Calif., schools took similar actions earlier.

School Says Game of Tag Is Out
    Thursday, June 20, 2002
    By Anita Vogel

SANTA MONICA — A Santa Monica elementary school has banned the game of tag, once synonymous with youth and innocence, because they say it creates self-esteem issues among weaker and slower children.

"We had some children who were not playing 'it' appropriately. How do you differentiate between those that are playing correctly and those that aren't?" asked Franklin Elementary School Principal Pat Samarge.

In the school's weekly newsletter, Samarge told parents that without adult supervision, the game would be banned. The principal said children playing tag suffered both physical and emotional injuries.

"Little kids were coming in and saying 'I don't like it.' [The] children weren't feeling good about it," Samarge said.

A show of hands please. How many of you were traumatized by Tag as a child?

OMG I loved to play Tag when I was a kid! It was a great way to get rid of all that energy! This is sorry to read... Each new generation seems to get worse and worse IMO.

They were making fun of this on the KTLA Morning News the other day, saying "So what are kids gonna do now sit in a room and just stare at each other and get fat without running around to burn off all that pent up energy?"

Good god what is this nation coming to when frickin' TAG is being banned at school for chrissake! What next? No more Heads Up 7-Up on rainy days! Might accidentally bend someones thumb back too much. I hate people!

Re: We are raising a generation of wusses!!!

    Pansies.

It's unbelievable the things that kids can't do now because they are "dangerous." Sure, I can see that if they are playing tag and tagging each other too roughly, causing others to fall and cut themselves open or break a bone... but this article says that kids were saying the don't like it? So, don't play - ever heard of that? Dodgeball? Yeah, it hurt sometimes but the bruises healed. I sucked at it, but I still loved playing. I remember pitching during kickball in gym and getting hit right in the face with the ball, bloody nose and loose tooth and all. What did my parents and I do? Laugh about it and say I should duck next time - DUH!

People need to learn that they aren't going to like everything in their environment. Rather than teaching our children to ban things they don't like, even though others do, we need to teach them to deal with ignoring/avoiding and coping with those things.

Oh my, I could go on and on.

And no more jumping rope, because some kids are less coordinated and will be humiliated if they get tangled up. No basketball either, because it's biased against short people. We'll just have nap time instead of recess from now on.

Re: We are raising a generation of wusses!!!

There is so much I could say about this... where to start, where to start...

I'm old enough that I remember riding in the car with not only not having a car seat, but (oh my gosh) no seat belt either. We drank out of garden hoses, had free run of the whole town when school wasn't in session and were expected to be out PLAYING what ever we could think up until it got dark then we had to come home. Our playground had swings, slides and (oh the horror) a merry go round thing. We fell down, we got scrapped, we got bruised, we got cut and you know what? WE'RE STILL ALIVE!!!!! If we were dumb enough to get hurt PLAYING our parents just looked at us, shrugged and said, "You won't do that again huh?"

WE FREAKING LEARNED TO DEAL WITH IT!!

Whats going to happen to these poor, sheltered kids when they have to go out into the big, real world and the rest of humanity or their boss doesn't give a rats patooty about their precious self esteem or hurting their feelings because they can't do the job they were hired to do??

Yes childhood can be painful but then so can adulthood. Life is painful. Thats why its life!! Nothing is ever going to be 100% perfect. There will always be someone smarter, prettier, more clever... so what! Shrug it off and move on with life!

A generation of wusses?? Thats only the tip of the iceburg.....

Tag is such an innocent game, next thing you know we won't be able to read because it might strain our eyes to badly.

I was at a park with a merry go round on Tuesday! I was so excited, I almost knocked some little kids down to ride on it. I put my son and nephew on board and started running around, pushing it, and then I jumped on....what a flashback! And then you drag your feet in the sand to make it stop or if you're really crazy you just jump off- life is good.

I am happy to report that nobody flew off or fell on their heads or became trapped underneath.

This probably all started because one kid was a spoil sport and came home crying to mom. Mom probably got her panties in a wad and made a big stink at the school, threatened to get a lawyer, etc.

Not only are kids wusses, but honestly, there are parents out there that have tantrums over EVERYTHING.

I'm with you. I was the nerdy, awkward, skinny kid that got picked last for every team sport. It hurt, but it also made me try harder and be more competitive. Somehow I survived and--surprise surprise--those life lessons as a kid have served me well as an adult.

I'm glad the school I teach at still allows the kids to play tag. We just remind them to stay on the grass and off the black top so it hurts less when they fall down.
