Tui's request regarding politics

I posted this somewhere within a thread but I thought it was something worth repeating.

Recently, I was at a bonfire with some people. Next to me there was a guy who I knew had opposing political view points. I took this opportunity to start a political conversation. Not a debate mind you, but an actual conversation.

It's really amazing how much information you get about a person's beliefs if you just let them talk and not constantly debate. I took issues that I believe are wrong and I asked him to explain why he thought they were right. For two opposing view points we actually agreed on a lot of things.

My request is that you MiceChatters go out and do the same. I think too many people are getting opinions of politics from TV and the internet, I think that is wrong. I find that most people you see on TV are usually outspoken and don't really represent a majority of the party. If you actually sit down and talk to someone, you will get so much more clarity about the issues. I also request to keep the conversation civil, no debating, we have enough of that nowadays.

If its anything like my experience, you will walk away feeling truly enlightened.

But Tui's idea applies to any political discourse, regardless of the form of government (except perhaps "ruthless dictatorship") or the country involved.

I don't like politics either and I am an American.

It's not to complicated for me its just way to much information to sort through to get through the BS for the right answer.

Besides, I am a firm believer that we have no real control over anything in this country, it's all about who has the bigger pocket book.

Not to change the subject, but if you listen to what people have to say without interrupting, you'll learn alot about them. No matter what the subject is.

Yes. I joined a debate in the "Debate Lounge", but nobody wanted to debate. One woman told me "*sigh* my mind is made up, so I really don't think anything you say is going to change that".

But if anyone will listen (and this by definition includes me), you learn a lot about why people believe weird things (to borrow from the book title authored by a good friend of mine), and can either change your position based upon facts, or be better prepared to teach yourself why your position is correct.

Einstein may be correct, when he stated (when asked to serve as Prime Minister of Israel)... "Politics are temporary... an equation is forever."

I 100% agree Tui. I ALWAYS question the media. It is unfortunate that there are people all over the world who believe everything the media says.

I also think no one should believe that Polls are 100% accurate either because they are not and never will be.

I totally agree. My grandmother is very set in her ways and there is no disagreeing about politics with her. When election time came around last year, my mom hadn't had time to research things and find out how she wanted to vote so she almost went by my grandma's vote. On the way to vote I talked to my mom and told her how I was voting and why. She changed her vote, but that wasn't my objective, it was just to inform her because I had researched both sides.

I love being able to talk to someone about politics, or anything, and have an actually conversation hearing both sides, even if in the end you decide to agree to disagree. Thank you for sharing your experience.
