Stage 2 Power Alert for California 7/24/06

We received an email at work that the California ISO has announced a Stage 2 power alert for the state. If usage does not decrease, they will begin rolling blackouts.

Large commercial customers that have contracted with the utilities to curtail power during high demand days have been asked to do so. If an operating reserve of less than one-and-a-half percent is unavoidable, a Stage Three will be initiated. Involuntary curtailments of service to customers including “rotating blackouts” are possible during this stage of emergency declaration.

The California ISO issued a Stage One Emergency at 10:00 a.m. today. At that time participants of the California ISO Voluntary Load Reduction Program were notified to implement voluntary conservation measures.

Today’s peak power demand on the transmission system is expected to reach 52,000 megawatts around 4:00 p.m. Thus far today, electricity demand is trending nearly 3,000 megawatts over the record demand of 49,036 experienced last Friday, July 21.
Keep cool if you do experience a blackout. And don't forget to save any files you are currently working on while on your computer.
Anything listed on the park maps as an attraction is fair game for inclusion in the Rally.
I cannot confirm nor deny the inclusion of any attraction in the Rally.

Did this just come outt? It seems like at 4:30 people would be leaving work...although more AC's could be firing up as people arrive home.

Related question: Has anyone else signed up for SCE's incentive plan where they will turn off your AC during peak periods? If so, has your AC ever been turned off because of it?

We had a box installed at our old house before we moved, but they never turned it off on us.

    Hmmmm....

Also related...the college that I work at has a deal with SCE that their rates will go up something like 10x the normal rate during stage two alerts. I remember reading that a stage two could cost them thousands of dollars, maybe as much as $20,000 per incident. They eventually bought their own generators to use in these situations.

Was surprised this hasn't happened earlier....have only experienced the "rolling blackout" once, and it wasn't for that long, I can live with that. OK, to cut back, won't cook tonight...hehe!

Yes. They don't turn off the A/C, they just increase the temperature. We normally run our A/C at 79. They increased the temp to 83. It's not too bad since we have fans in all the rooms.

Gosh this must be Gray Davis' fault, lets recall him. Oh wait, we already did that.

I got a similar e-mail from SDG&E, but so far no rolling blackouts or anything here in San Diego.

The time around 4pm is usually the highest because you have people coming home from work/school, and also people still at work and businesses still in full swing. Its high demand on both the residential and commercial front at the same time.

This is what happens when the power companies do not upgrade aging services.. then again.. it doesn't do this quite often... maybe this winter they will learn and upgrade...
