Not afraid to fly, just mad that I have to go through more checks again. Not that its a bad thing just inconvinient. So the latest is no liquid of any sort, unless it is baby formula or medication. So yes it does mean hand sanitizer. Well let hope things run smooth, I fly out to Vegas next friday!!!!

I hate heights, but I love flying.

Such news should be taken as a sign of success. It means that security measures are working.

Your afraid to fly because of a CAR accident?

Then I'd be more afraid to drive to the airport than to fly on the plane.

Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million. On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000. Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. However, the perception is that you have more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger. Experience shows otherwise considering that over 50,000 people are killed on the highways every year.

LOS ANGELES WORLD AIRPORTS REPONDS TO U.S. HOMELAND SECURITY DEPARTMENT’S UPGRADING OF NATIONAL THREAT CONDITION LEVEL TO ORANGE

(Los Angeles, California – August 10, 2003) Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) announced it has heightened alertness and increased security at its airports in response to the U.S. Homeland Security Department raising the national threat level for the aviation sector to High or Orange:
  • Los Angeles Airport Police are working with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), other federal and local law enforcement agencies, and airlines to implement a range of security measures appropriate to the heightened security.
  • Law enforcement presence at LAX includes hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Airport Police, Los Angeles Police Department and numerous federal agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Air Marshals, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as well as K-9 patrols and special operations units.
  • Five airlines operate 20 daily, non-stop flights between London-Heathrow International Airport and LAX: Air New Zealand, American Airlines, British Airways, United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic Airlines. Passengers bound for London-Heathrow and people meeting arriving passengers from London are advised to check with their airlines before coming to the airport to verify flight times.
  • Due to new measures instituted this morning by TSA, ALL passengers are being advised to NOT pack any liquids in carry-on bags, including beverages, hair gels, lotions, etc., as well as electronic key fobs. Passengers are advised to check the TSA's Internet website at www.tsa.gov for a complete listing of what passengers may pack in checked luggage and carry-on bags.
  • Based on TSA's recommendation that passengers come to the airport one hour earlier than normal, airport officials recommend passengers on domestic flights arrive two to three hours before their departure time and three to four hours before an international departure. Due to the intensified security screening, security screening process is expected to take considerably longer than normal. Airport officials recommend passengers on domestic flights arrive in their airline terminal two to three hours before their departure time and three to four hours before an international departure. This guidance is in effect until the threat level is reduced from Orange to Yellow.
  • Airport officials note that while the public will notice some increased security related to operational alertness, other security measures are confidential and may go largely unnoticed by most people.
  • Officials added that they have no information indicating that any LAWA facilities or flights are the target of any specific threats or plots.
  • Los Angeles World Airports, the City department that owns and operates LAX, ONT and two other airports in the Southland, remains committed to providing the necessary resources to maintain a high level of safety and security for the traveling public and airport workers.

From the FAQ section of the TSA site:

Q:
Media have also reported that laptops, cell phones and electronic items are no longer allowed. Is that true?

A:
No. TSA continues to allow laptop computers, cell phones and other electronic items.

Re: Afraid to Fly?

I never have been a fan of flying but I do it to go to the Disney parks but that's it. This new alert doesn't bother me though because I really have come to grips with the fact that when my times up my time is up no matter what. So does this mean I more afraid now then I have been in the past? Nope same fear as I have had in the past no more no less.

Funny little side note how afraid am I to fly? On my first flight to WDW we hit some bad turbulance I grabbed the seat in front of me so hard that when I could manage to bring my arms down again I ripped the sky phone out of the seat. I was so shaken they had to pry the whole thing out of my hands I couldn't let go. My mom still tells my kids about this every time we fly to Disney. I have gotten better but I will never be a good flyer. I need my psp or laptop to keep me distracted. I have also taken my portable dvd player in the past for the same reason.

In other words...

Heck no! No Terrorist person or plot is going to scare me out of flying, nosiree!

BTW These new politices may not be around as long as you might think. From the scuttlebutt I have heard from the media is that a plot or threat like this was expected and the government had already started developing a system that would be able to tell if certain things in bottles and tubes are safe or not. Tey weere hoping to finsh before a threat or plot of this magnitude came up. Of course they did not. Of course there is no timetable for when all this could happen so I guess we have to live with the rules for awhile.

First of all, people who have no fear of certain things should not make lite of another person's fear. I am afraid of many things. Some of those things I can avoid. I can only suggest that if you are not flying alone, keep your loved one close. Definitely bring things to occupy your mind, and try and keep busy. I would say affoid caffeine. I always ask for an aisle seat, because then I don't feel trapped. Also it's better to admit your fear, than hide it. Try to relax with an interesting book. Most flights have headsets with music. I never sleep the night before a flight, so then I doze a little on the flight. I chew on hard candy, to keep me from getting hungry. None of this might help, but I wish you well on your next flight. I know that I will be nervous on my next one. I just got notice, that I shoul arrive at the airport 3 hours before my flight, so that means, I may have to depart my home in the middle of the night at 3:30 a,m,

Good luck to you.

Re: Afraid to Fly?

There is no doubt about the fact that there are people out there who don't like us, and are willing to go to the ultimate extremes to show that. The events of the past few hours show that again. And it's nice to see that the plot was foiled.

From Disneyphile:

Quote:
Afraid, no. Annoyed, yes.

Next thing we know, they're not going to allow electronic devices nor books to be carried on.

The goal of terrorism is not to kill people - it's to cause fear and to change our ways of life. And, at this rate, they're succeeding.
AMEN to that, except to say that their goal is not only to kill people.

And Barbaraann, I've said it so many times before and I'll say it again ... the chances of getting killed on the freeways from LAX to Anaheim are far greater than anything you'd face in the air.

Re: Afraid to Fly?

I agree that fear is a bad thing. I also understand the rationale, of telling someone that they have more likelihood of dying in a car than a plane. However, when a person is afraid, they are not rational. They feel the fear and they sometimes freeze, and get physically ill. Taking their mind off their fear helps, and talking and keeping friends near helps too. I really do not like being told to not be afraid. I don't choose my fears, they are just there. I am not saying that I don't try to confront them. Because sometimes, I do. Walk in my body, and you understand me better. Some people are very brave. I just don't happen to be brave.

The car accident we were in happened less than a week after a bad flight from Milwaukee to Atlanta with a LOT of turbulence. We took off in rain turning into sleet and snow and it was BUMPY!!! The correlation between the feeling of helplessness on the plane and the feeling of helplessness careening toward a car that shouldn't have been in our lane was too close. Beyond that, I had to deal with my own mortality and have been afraid of flying or doing anything risky since then.

True that. How many bad accidents are there a day on the road, compared to the 1 out of 1000's of planes that might crash. I think heightening security again is a good thing. My mom called me on hour ago and was saying how bad this London thing is. It doesn't worry me really. As someone else said, if it's your time to go then it is. If I need to fly somewhere then I will.
