HELP! NEED ADVICE!!! - Looking Across America - Other States To Live In

Ok my fellow micechatters, I could use some help here, and I'm looking to all of you from across the country here.....

    I WANT OUT OF CALIFORNIA!!!!!!!

Sorry, but most people say they want in, that they want to come live here, but I want out. A change of scenery, ya know? Reasons being:

    High rent
    High cost of homes
High gas prices (though yes, they're everywhere)
LARGE population, in other words, it's overcrowded
Bad drivers (the worst are in California)
    Traffic
    Earthquakes
    Hardly any jobs
    And rude people

So yes, I definitly need a change of scenery and I'm looking for some place that is somewhat quieter, maybe more spread out, not as crowded, and where it's at least somewhat cheaper to live. I've got nothing tying me down here, not even Disneyland. My apologies to the dedicated fans, but it will always be here to come back to, and after working there and having annual passes for many years, I'm burned out.

Oh, and there are a couple of things I don't want. They are.....tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, and high taxes.

So, any advice from across the 50 states?

I think that leaves Nevada and maybe Arizona.

I've often thought about leaving the state, but I think the thought of leaving my friends and leaving Disneyland will keep my family in SoCal despite it's drawbacks.

SP: I liked Vegas. All the advantages of a major metropolitan area, but 1/2 hour drive gets you completely away from all the hassles. Prices have gone up the last two years, but are still vastly cheaper than SoCal. The weather's not as bad as you think, it's only really hot 4 months out of the year, fall and spring are LOVELY because of the dry air, and it actually gets cold (and once every few years even snows) in winter, but you don't have to deal with the whole shoveling your car out thing.

PLUS... no state income tax. And unlike Texas, no tornadoes.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

New Mexico. My friends sold their condo here for $380k and built their own nice sized home in Albuquerque for around $220k.

I'd say be careful what you wish for. There's a ton of things to do in LA and that's not always the case. I will tell you you're wrong about the worst drivers. I lived in Atlanta for over 4 years and I nearly had tears of joy to be stuck in traffic on the 405 again. The drivers in Atlanta are far and away the worst, and Miami's no picnic either.

I was in San Jose for the 1989 Loma Prieta quake and was back home in Simi Valley for the Northridge quake, so I've been through two of the bigger quakes. Then I was in Atlanta when a tornado destroyed a shopping center nearby and put a tree through the apartment building next to mine. I'll take an earthquake over a tornado any day.

Tucson isn't horrible. There's not a lot of things to do here, but the weather is good and you're an hour and a half from Phoenix. When it was really hot here, the San Fernando Valley was hotter. It is overpriced here, though. The house next door to us just went up for sale, it's 3 bedrooms and is in a good location but it's a much older house and it's asking price is $395K. It's not that big. I'd rather pay a bit more and move back to LA, myself.

If you don't mind Haboobs than try AZ- My friend from AZ said she'd rather have blizzards to deal with than cleaning the inches of dust

Here's a good place to check out: http://www.findyourspot.com/

You take a quiz regarding what you want from a location and it suggests areas for you to live!

Montana is out, we have incredibly high state taxes and the potential for earthquakes.

Why not move to Utah or Idaho - everyone else from California is.

Will trade husband for Disneyland and DCA Pins!

Re: HELP! NEED ADVICE!!! - Looking Across America - Other States To Live In

I love this quiz. I think it's great for gaging what kind of escapism one is looking for. When I feel that I've been lacking culture, NYC and San Francisco pop up in my results a lot. When it has been cooler outside and I just want to enjoy a tropical drink on the beach-- you guessed it, Hawaii pops up as a spot.

There are likely hundreds of places that are more than suitible for most people. The key is to find the correct balance of work, family life, leisure activity, family connectedness, and retreat. Once that is established, things like "high rent" and "too unfriendly" seem more secondary.

Good luck... and may you find the location that best suits your needs and wants.
