They may want to preserve the house somewhere, either at DL or WDW - They could restore it and put it inside a park... But the timing is bad. If anyone found out that the Walt Disney Co. was in an open auction bidding for the house, the auction price would head for the moon.

    Strategy.

If they want to do it at this auction, they would get someone to snipe the bid in at the very end, and at least bump it past the reserve - you don't advertise your interest early. And you don't use a bidder name that someone can figure out who it belongs to...

If they want to do it outside of an auction, they would have to get a 'Straw Buyer' to do it for them quietly right now, the same way they bought up all the land in Florida for WDW. After a while the locals figured out someone was buying a lot of land, but until the very end they didn't know who - and when they found out at the very end the asking price for the land jumped big-time.

Greenfield Village should buy it... after all, it was a huge inspiration for Disneyland.

So hard to not click bid!
    Must... move... mouse... away.....
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

I'm from Chicago. The house is in a predominently Hispanic working-class suburb that isn't as safe as you'd want it to be. The area is called Hermosa and is located on the northwest side of the city.

I agree, Disney should buy the house and have it moved or the City of Chicago should step in and re-instate the landmark designation. They did that with Ronald Reagan's Chicago boyhood house. If it stays where it's at though, it won't last.

Here's a map of the city with Hermosa identified on the map.

You confirmed my suspicions. The photo looked like it was a house on the south end of Columbus -- definitely not a place that I'd want to go.

As a normal house, seems a bit over-priced for the area, too.

Like I said, rather than Disney buying it, Greenfield Village should buy it and move the house to Deerborne, Michigan. They haven't had a new house in a while and they do love birthplace homes. Plus, we know they'll take great care of it. (It'll also give them excuse to sell those photos of Walt taken at Greenfield Village just a bit longer.)
