Third, don't pay for a beach rental, too expensive. I would recomment staying at the Bahia hotel down in Pacific Beach. Get a room right out on the bay.

Don't do anything downtown or Hotel Circle. The ONLY reason to stay downtown would be if you were to stay at a boutique hotel, other than that FORGET IT.

    Anything else, just ask me.
    Migo,

That place is a bit on the pricey side for not being on the beach. (whatever a bay is?)

Any reccomendations for Mission or Pacific beach? Also, from a local perspective, is Mission or Pacific ok, or is it ghetto? I don't have a feel for it.

Thanks, my four legged little pal.

You're painting me a verbal picture, waaaay too much info....

But it's not like the beach, beach, right? Like it's a bay, which means no waves, just boats right? I want to be near the beach beach, where there are real waves, etc.

Play nice and there is a milkbone in it for you. (and with a setup like that, I will wait and watch what you weave)

The rooms to the Bahia face the bay, but you are within walking distance to the beach with waves from there as well.

Re: San Diego Trip Planning Help Needed! Zoo? Beach?

I'm from North County San Diego so I'm partial to Del Mar and Solana Beach. My favorite date was dinner at one of the many places in La Jolla (was proposed to at the Cove) and walking by all of those Rodeo Drive-type shops. But the thing about SD and probably most of So Cal is that not many hotels are 'on the beach' - that prime property is used up by people living on the beach. And the few that are on the beach are very pricey. Good deals are in Hotel Circle which is pretty central. About the Bahia; the first night of our Honeymoon was there and our reception was on the William D Evans. The Bahia bell (stern-wheller) that goes back and forth over the bay (to the Catamaran hotel) every half hour is also very romantic..... Man! I need a trip back there!

Yes, the Bahia faces the bay, no waves, but you walk literally a block and there are waves.

The hotels that face the bay tend to be the nicer ones, the ones that face the water (which I'm not aware of any) are usually the Super 8's and the not so nice. Basically the waterfront is taken over by timeshares and rentals. If you get any hotels/motels near the beach, they are about a block in, on the street. That's if you're dealing with Mission/Pacific Beach.

Not sure about your options in Del Mar/Coronado.

Another option if you aren't up for the annual passes to the zoo is to go through getawaytoday.com - they offer a package that is adults at the kids price AND "Your deluxe ticket package includes: one-day admission, a guided bus tour, Express Bus, and round trip Skyfari!" This ticket is $22/person plus the $10/order fee. Look around their site, you might pick up some other good deals too. And their shipping is FAST!!

Is Coronado like a beach, or is it a bay kind of thing? I drove by something once, and it looked like a horse shoe surrounding water, where there really wasn't waves coming in, etc. I wasn't sure if that was what Coronado was. Is that a good place to stay?

    Thanks!
Coronado is a city located across San Diego Bay. It is tourist oriented and has a great downtown where you and your sweetie can walk. If you go to the open beach to the north of the Del, it will be on the ocean. If you go to the state beach, you have the choise of the bay (not recomended) or the ocean. The water is pretty clean there. A lot of the other beaches close to swimming a few days after it rains. The storm drain runoff polutes the water. Let me know if you have other questione.

I wouldn't call Coronado's downtown "great". Small. Very small. And not really a downtown. Just a street, really.

It is more like a village. Coronado is more family oriented.

Re: San Diego Trip Planning Help Needed! Zoo? Beach?

I agree that Coronado is San Diego's best beach, followed closely by Carlsbad, and then La Jolla Shores. I lived in San Diego for eight years, and La Jolla and the Gaslamp area downtown have enough fun to keep your nights busy. The San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and the Wild Animal Park are fun during days, as is local hiking, and the amazing Mission, Presidio, and Old Town San Diego are great areas to see, or you can take a trip to Ensenada, or just spend the day at the beach. Every sport you can think of is in San Diego as well, as are some great museums, all conveniently located in Balboa Park.

My pictures from just last weekend, if you want to see recent pics, are below:

I don't know why everyone is enamored with Coronado and its beaches. I try to stay away from there. It's so very BORING.
