I don't know if that would qualify as a defining moment in your life but...Who am I to say.

Re: What Are The Defining Moments In Your Life?

    hrm... good question.

Being sexually abused at age 8. Not a happy moment, but defining, none the less.

Reading Cannery Row by Steinbeck at age 10. After that I knew I wanted to be a writer.

Spending two years in Australia on a mission for my church. It not only opened my eyes to a world of possibilities, it also helped form my faith.

Working at Disney World. Not only did it involve moving across the country, it also is where I met the girl who would become my wife...

    Marrying Elizabeth.

Writing my first novel and publishing my first short stories.

The chipping away of my sanity with my father's suicide, the loss of my baby, my mother's death, my divorce, the death of 2 cats and job loss - all within a short time

The slow return of my sanity over many years of hard work and the slow peeling on the onion.

Re: What Are The Defining Moments In Your Life?

Being adopted at age 7. It was terrifying.
Losing my grandma who was my closest friend at age 11.
Losing control of my asthma so badly everyone thought I was going to die at age 12.
Witnessing a big drug deal and having my life threatened at age 16.
Losing control of my asthma again so badly that I had to move to the middle of nowhere so I could attempt to breathe. With that came the realization that I can't be in denial about my asthma and that it's never going to go away. And I'm ridicously lucky to still be alive. Age 20.

    Wow.

Divorce of my parents at age 6. It still is defining my life as I type since they are currently driving me crazy.

Death of my Grandpa at age 12. Made me very angry at the world and I re-evaluated my religious views.

Working at Disneyland, which I had dreamed of doing my whole life until then. It showed me that I can realize my dreams if I try.

Getting pregnant on accident at age 22. This changed me very much. I had to instantly grow up. And I did.

Marrying my husband at age 22.

Moving 2000 miles away from all of my family and friends.

Wow. Some really amazing, and amazingly personal, moments in this thread.

Here are some of mine, in chronological order:

My father dying when I was 5.
Getting fired from my first job.
Meeting Julie, now my wife, for the first time.
Visiting WDW for the first time. (I was 31 years old. What a deprived kid, eh? )
Seeing Illuminations: ROE for the first time.
    Getting married.
    Seeing my kids born.
My mom passing away in January of 2005.
Renewing vows and celebrating 10 year anniversary with Julie and the kids at WDW in Feb. of '06.

-Having a girl with special needsl tell me that she thought that I would be snobby, like all of the other popular girls but that I was really nice. =)
-Not having to pay for college thanks to my filling out every scholarship available.

I'm sure there's something that I'll remember later but here goes.
1- death of my dad (1995)
2- starting to date women (1992)
    3- learning I've always been a pagan (1993)
    4- getting married (1996)
    5- buying a house (1997)

It's so disheartening to see that for so many people, their lives' most defining moments are tragic.

Re: What Are The Defining Moments In Your Life?

Losing my dad made me reconsider my relationship with my mother- as in, I should appreciate her. We had some very good talks when I was home for my dad's memorial; something my family generally avoids. We don't do heart-to-hearts.

I think tragedy does that sometimes; throws into contrast the things you have left.
