Cool The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

Hooray! The magical month of March is here. It's the most awesome month for college basketball fans during the whole season. So who's up for some awesome hoops action? The only thing better tan this week is probably next Thursday and Friday (first two days of the tourney). this week is so awesome, especially Wed-Sunday with basketball on TV for hours with tons of games to watch! What excitement.

So who's ready for some March Madness?

Re: The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

I can't get excited till next sunday (which I have to go to a bridal shower), really who plans parties on selection Sunday. Anyway, I am sure as the week progresses I will get more into the mode. I need to get my little TV ready to bring to work with me for next week. This is the first year in a while I wont be in Vegas for the opening games.

Re: The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

This is going to be a weird year and I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my bracket. Duke isn't going anywhere this year, Uconn is too young, UCLA is dropping games it should win....it's like the NCAA in Bizarro world. I wonder what upstart teams will shock everyone this year.

George Mason...I still can't get over that from last year.

Re: The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

What about the Bruins? Their loss last weekend was excusable...but, even allowing for the fact that Cal played very well...an opening round loss to the Golden Bears in the Pac-10 tournament? Their seemingly assured top seed should be in doubt, but with the other things going on it looks like they'll still get the number one in the West.

It won't matter for long if they keep playing the way they did today. But Florida went through its funk...this year seems to be even more unpredictabe than ever. And sorry DisneyKat, Duke goes down in the ACC tonight...

Here's to March Madness, beginning with the conference tournaments and Selection Sunday!

Re: The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

Not sure if the UCLA losses recently will matter much. You can still lose early in your conference tourney and still do well in the NCAA tourney and vice versa for teams who win the Conference tourney being one-and-done in the Big Dance. I will use the 1993 Georgia Tech team for my example here. They were a bubble team and went on a run to win the ACC tourney which was surprisingly not affected by the huge blizzard that engulfed the Eastern half of the country that same weekend. They ended up with a 3 seed on Selection Sunday and drew Southern. Tech was upset the following week.

Speaking of Tech a fantastic game last night/this morning with Wake Forrest-it nearly went 3 OT's. However the loss last night will probably leave the Jackets on the outside looking in on Sunday night. As much as I am a fan of Tech in basketball, I would rather see a Drexel, Old Dominion, or Missouri State get in the Tourney instead.

One other thought. I know it is done for TV but the big conferences that have their championship on Sunday afternoon hurts them. Especially if you have a team that's made a run to that game that should get an extra look by the Committee but when that Championship game is over said committee only has an hour left to wrap things up. Last year Florida got a major scare by South Carolina (who ended up being NIT Champ) in the SEC Championship. If the game was held on Saturday I think South Carolina could have gotten in the field.

Re: The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

I'm already scoping out places to watch the games with my husband. We always couch potato it for the entire tournament.

This year, since my daughter is 12, we're going to head out and about to watch a few of the games at some sports bars, but nothing beats the couch.

I can throw pillows at home, hard out in public.

Re: The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

We should start a micechat tourney - I'm in one on ESPN or yahoo or something. I've almost given up trying to be scientific about my picks. There is always going to be upsets, and whatnot. Maybe this year, I should go by favorite mascot. (Those are the people that usually win, the ones that have no rhyme or reason to their picks).

Re: The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

I've been at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena the past two nights at the Big West Conference Tournament and it's been a great tournament. Last night Cal State Fullerton beat Pacific in double overtime, the night before UC Irvine beat UC Riverside by one point. Tonight UC Irvine plays Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton plays Cal Poly. If you live in the area, I strongly recommend going to the games. The first one starts at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Anaheim Convention Center, they games are also on ESPNU for those interested.

Re: The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

A lot of people seem to be asking...who is the "George Mason" of this year? Seems to me that they are forgetting that George Mason was such a great story last year, because such schools hardly ever make it to the Final Four any more.

I really don't see any potential GM's making the Final 4 this year.

What do you think?

Re: The Official March Madness thread-Yay!

I don't know Barry. There is so much parity in College basketball now. There are only a few great teams. I think we may have Ohio State and Florida make the Final Four along with two teams that we never even expected.
