    St. Urho's Day - March 16th

I know probably most of you have never heard of Saint Urho let alone the fact that he has a whole day dedicated to him. If you have heard of St. Urho's Day you're probably from Northern Minnesota. Saint Urho's Day is celebrated on March 16th each year. More Info here.

For those of you that haven't heard of the Patron Saint of Finland, a brief history.

St. Urho is thought to have chased the grasshoppers out of Finland thus saving the grape crop and therefore all of the wine.

So, this Friday, have a glass of wine and celebrate the removal of the grasshoppers.

You think if I chased the strollers out of Disneyland, it would merit Sainthood (or maybe deification!!?)? Just kidding all you SUV-stroller-drivin-ankle-banging-traffic-jammers out there--you know who you are!!:

Hmm...St. Paul...drat, we already gots one...

I wonder if THAT'S why the kids are off of school next monday.

The school website, sign, calendar, etc says they are off next Monday for a Holiday. Not a teacher day, etc ... but a HOLIDAY.

    Maybe it's St Urho's day!!!

As a matter of fact...I will be at a wine tasting event most of tomorrow (well...today really...the 16th). So I must indeed have a Saint on my shoulder!

My husband is of Finnish descent (very few people pronounce my last name correctly the first time) and he's never heard of this one! Purple and green, huh? Almost as interesting as that club of ladies who wear purple and red.

well, the holiday started in my dad's hometown of Virginia, Minnesota on the Iron Range 50 years ago. So it may not be real well known outside of Finns from Northern Minnesota. My last name is often mispronounced as well.
