    Identity Theft Warning!!

I'm writing this so that what happened to me doesn't happen to anyone else here. Many of us maintain personal websites, blogs, etc. On those sites is information about us, often more than we know. On my website were pictures, personal information, and even my resume that I placed there as part of a college technology class a few years back.

I discovered this week, in an incident that I can only describe as shocking and humiliating, that someone lifted information off of my website, including a photo, and was masquerading as me in chat rooms on a porno website. There was a profile that included my city, age, education... details as if I had written them. There was also information regarding my daily work schedule, designed to make it look like I had left work to do "naughty" things. (It looks like my email was also compromised.) I doubt this is a random thing, but an all out attack on my character.

Although I have been able to get the site to cancel the account, there will be evidence (due to the postings) on google for years to come. I am taking steps to lesson the blow, but the damage is done.

All this to say, BE CAREFUL what you post. I'm sure we all know that the Internet is both a wonderful and a horrible place. My reputation is now at stake because of this. Identity theft is more than your social security number and credit cards. It can attack your character too. In my case, people may choose to believe my word, but many will choose to believe Google instead.

I hate people who steal from others!

No wonder we have to be so suspicious of others.

Powerful stuff. Your data was used for evil. It can be used for good, too. I used a blog and some other personal website posts to track down a VMK scammer halfway across the globe. Blogs and personal websites are powerful tools for people to learn a lot about you. If you don't want those details known (especially for the scammers among us), you should be very careful about what you post on them.

Wow that's absolutely crazy. I've heard of people stealing identities for financial gain, but to join a porn site and pretend they are somebody else ... that's just WRONG!!!!

What a horrifying situation. I'm so sorry that happened to you. People are such creeps!!!! This is why I decided against posting my photo even in my avatar here.

Update: Google says they will not "recrawl" the sites to reset the caches, and the sites refuse to take down pictures of me (not bad ones, mind you, but me just the same). Thinking about taking legal action. This is going to be a long battle I fear.

I was thinking the same thing........and come to believe that this was a personal attack to this person by someone who may know him through some sort of way.

    My opinion of course.

    Re: Identity Theft Warning!!

Update2: So far, the "site" is being semi-cooperative, removing my photo and the fake account. The posts are still there, but at least my picture doesn't show up next to them. At least this is what shows up on Google. Google is another story. Although their customer service says they will "expedite" removal of material like this, they have told me that in my case, they will NOT. So, no more Google for me. There are other search engines.

Thanks for all your comments and support. The moral of all of this is... be VERY careful with your personal information.
