We thought it might be fun to visit Las Vegas July 4th: have dinner at the Stratosphere and watch the fireworks over the strip. We made all the reservations and have been anticipating the trip. That all changed when the mail arrived today.
An invitation arrived... reading, in part:
"The Commanding Officer
Commander William A. Bullard III
requests the pleasure of your company for the
On Wednesday, the fourth day of July
two thousand seven at eleven o'clock
onboard USS CONSTITUTION"
Each year, "Old Ironsides" sails out of Boston Harbor for a special Independence Day celebration. A few hundred civilians are allowed to come along. Selection is by lottery. Out of about 600,000 entries, a few hundred are selected. This year, we got lucky!
So, Vegas will be cancelled and a flight to Boston will be scheduled. I cannot begin to tell you how excited we are about this. The USS CONSTITUTION is the oldest US Navy ship afloat. Commissioned by George Washington, it was launched in 1797 and continues to be maintained in perfect condition. The rivits of the hull were hand-fashioned by Paul Revere. You can read more here:
To take part in this celebration aboard this historic vessel is truly an honor. This will be a July 4th to remember. Of course, I'll be taking a ton of pics and maybe a little video to share when we return.
I'm just a little stunned.
