Let me tell you a little bit about my family.
My sister has been in the Marines for about 21 years now. She went career. Has been on numerous tours of duty, including Somalia, Desert Storm, and more recently Iraq, twice. She has since been stationed in Hawaii for 3 years and has finally decided to retire. After she retires she will write a book, she was a photojournalist in the service. After that she will go to Afghanistan to participate in charity work. My family is very proud of her, as am I.
My father is retired. He converted to Hinduism years ago and makes annual trips to India. He called me recently to let me know that he would be moving to India for good. Long story short, he is opening a foundation for young girls there to go to college (a la Oprah). I'm very proud of him.
With my sister retiring and dad moving out of the country the family is planning a reunion to coincide with her retirement ceremony in O'ahu, Hawaii.
My husband, daughter and I don't plan on attending purely out of a financial strain. It's been a rough few months but we manage. Don't get me wrong, the house gets paid for, food, school, bills, etc. But the funds for a trip like that just wasn't feasible on such short notice.
Last week my other sister in Colorado calls me out of the blue and says " no strings attached, no payment necessary, we have tickets for you to come to the reunion".
I'm telling you, I started crying. Who does that nowadays? Seriously?
I was in total shock, very happy, kind of numb even.
My husband and I aren't used to being on the receiving end of kindness like this. (Actually I take that back, earlier this year our coworkers all pitched in a gave us some funds when our house was broken into. Cried for that too. There are good people out there.)
I'm especially delighted because my family and I only get to see each other every few years so this is special. (Geez, I'm crying now.)
I just feel like shouting from the mountaintops how happy I am! But putting it on MiceChat is even better.
Thanks for letting me share.
