Welcome to MiceChat, and I agree with you about smoking. I am allergic to cigarette smoke (not pipe or cigar smoke, but cigarette smoke... Must be the additives) and I try to encourage my friends not to do it. However, I don't think it's the government's place to tell people not to smoke aside from in bars, restaurants, workplaces, etc.
I agree, the government should regulate or ban ciggarettes and tobacco more, I myself walk home every day and have had to go into a building to keep from gaging from ciggarette smoke
Being severely asthmatic and having watched my favorite person die from lung cancer from smoking, I am very much opposed to it. But I wouldn't take that choice from someone else. if someone wants to make what I consider a poor decision, they should have that right. As should I. So no, i wouldn't ban smoking.
I say let smoking continue. I consider smoking to be one of mankind's few predators. Instead of the weak and old, it removes the foolish.
Tobacco helped create our country as it was one of our major trades when we started. Besides, the government makes tons of money from tobacco companies in taxes so I don't ever see it happening.

I hate hate hate smoking. My mother and my wife's parents died of lung cancer, and it probably contributed to my mother's memory loss and senile dementia that slowly took her away from us long before she died. I could go on and on...
But I don't think a total ban on smoking would work. I'm all for severly restricting where and when people are allowed to smoke, in order to protect the health of the rest of us. And no one should be allowed to smoke in the presence of a child. Yet treating smokers like criminals isn't the solution. It might even worsen the problem.
It's a dilemma, but adult smokers, are adults, after all, and they are aware of the consequences of that unhealthy habit. I'm all for doing whatever it takes to help those who wish to quit, prevent exposure to children, and keep the air as clean as we can for the rest of us.

You can make the same argument for anything though.
I'm never up for the government telling you what you can and cannot do to your own bodies.
I'll probably get flamed for this, but I even think they should end the war on drugs, saves loads of money there. People will still do them, legal or not.
