    Saying "Goodbye"

On June 16 a friend went out for a night of fun. Expecting to have a great night, he started to drink. A few hours later he passed out. His friends tried to take him home, unsuccessful in waking him up from his sleep in the van they left him lay. In the morning, waking him up still proved unsuccessful.
Joshua Frank Smith lost his life early Sunday, June 17, 2007, on Father's Day. At the age of 19, his life was taken due to alcohol poisoning.
Leaving us with memories of the past and a cautionary reminder for the future.
    Josh, you will be missed.
To everyone, please be careful, and don't turn a night of fun into a morning of tragedy.

    Re: Saying "Goodbye"

This is a very tragic story, but one that does bear repeating. A lot of people who have issues with drinking never think about something like this happeneing. You hear about drunk driving accidents all the time, but who ever thinks you could simply drink too much and never wake up again?

I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend.

I am so sorry for your friend, his family, and all of his friends. It is scary how quickly a night of fun can turn into something terribly tragic.

I'm very sorry. That is very sad.

The same thing almost happened to my sisters friend. They thought she had passed out, but in the morning she was still out. They called 911 and she was in a coma for a few days, but pulled through.

Sorry about the loss of your friend. But thank you for sharing this story. Alcohol poisioning is something that not a lot of people realize can happen, and happen very easily.

Sadly, these things don't seem to change with time. Someone that I knew, and was looking forward to graduating high school with. lost her life in much the same manner about two weeks before the end of school.

    That was in June, 1974.

I am so sorry, Fantasmic, for your loss. Your story brought back painful 33-year old memories for me. I hope it can stop the insanity for someone else.

    Thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry you've lost your friend Josh. Age 19 is so young and I am sure he will be missed by many friends and family. It does bear repeating that drinking to excess is a problem and if only his friends had taken him to an E.R. or something....he'd still be here today. Very sad indeed.

Thank you to everyone for keeping Josh and is family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
SCUBabe, I'm glad your sister's friend made it through and her life was spared.
Radiobarry, I'm so sorry for your loss as well. Unfortuantely it seems that things do not appear to change much over time, no matter how much we may wish they will.

Sorry to hear about your friend, what a shame. Unfortunately, a fact of life is this incessant drinking binges that can lead to something like this. Sorry for your loss.

This is also a good reminder that teens need to really do a good job of taking care of their buddies. If someone is so drunk they are unresponsive, they need to be seen in the ER. Leaving someone like that is a death sentence, even if they don't succumb to alcohol poisoning, they can vomit, and aspirate, which will kill them even faster.
